Default Biggest Cities you've driven in?

ok, interested in what people think re: Big cities o/s?

whats the biggest you have driven in?
what were some of the experinces - good or bad?
strange rules?
what city/cities did you find the easiest or most plesant to drive in?

I have never driven in NYC, and would really like too.

I haven't been interstate nor overseas so mine would be Melbourne (CBD). Boy how many times have I mis-read the street signs (especially them hook turns!) and went into a street that I wasn't supposed to.

That and congested/peak hour traffic scares me.

Did NYC a few years ago. Arrived at 9 in the evening in a 2001 Ford Escort rent a car.

traffic was mad in volume but surprisingly very courtious. Especially when we went down from eight lanes into one in the space of 1/2 a mile!!!! :

NYC is crazy place to drive... tried it once... but ended up giving the hire car back to the company and catching a cab. Only drove around the block, but took an hour.... No chance.

London is even crazier as people try to avoid the central london congestion charge... (IE ME) So we had to go the long way to get anywhere....! Plus the British all think they are Nigel Mansell.... So its a race to every corner, every merge.... Thats awesome fun.

Driving anywhere in an older city in Europe can be entertaining, as the streets are not often wide enough sometimes for even small cars topass each other!

London is mad. I drove through the middle to return the hire car to Marble Arch. Took ages and i ended up swaering at a lot of people. Milan is interesting. The traffic flows quite quickly which can be a bit daunting when the street signs are impossible to read, it is your first time in a left hand drive car and there are no lanes marked on the road. The Melbourne CBD right turn from the left lane affair is no fun either. Italian autostrada are awesome to drive on :-)

Gold coast at peak hour with road works sucks. I took me an hour to travel about 5kms. Sydney is also pretty kaotic (sp) around the docks at peak hour with these huge trucks around you. I remember being in a little nissan pulsar hatch and being stuck in between 2 massive semi-trailers. Its was kinda scary!

I've been to LA LA land once and even though they more freeways there than we have roads overall, it is peak hour 24/7. Plus there are neighbourhoods where you just DO NOT stop for any reason.

Driven in Sydney, throughout Germany and Honolulu. None were too traumatic. I thought Sydney was the worst of the lot really.

I found Brisbane also quite difficult to navigate, but I found Perth quite good.

Try heading north up the Gold Coast Highway after Indy has been and gone. Took me an hour to move a 1km.

I'm hopeless driving around Brisbane, I have to study the Refidex for a good half hour before I leave...

Haven't driven over seas. When we were in melbourne last year, we plotted a course on the map to get out of the city so we didn't have to take a right hand turn that would result in doing that stupid turn left to turn right move.

Honestly, its the worst idea i've ever seen or heard of.

Agreed, London is nuts! Once you get on the freeways though, 90-100mph all the way!

Driven in New York, Washington DC, LA and San Diego whilst in the US last year. New York was fine. Washington was terrible.

God bless police that make sensible decisions.... They wont book someone doing 90mph on an empty motorway, but will throw the book at someone even slightly exceeding the speed limit in a town... Or even someone driving somewhat eratically @ the speed limit anywhere!

NYC in afternoon peak hour heading to New Jersey, Boston (apparently the worst city in the USA to drive), DC, LA, New Orleans, cleveland, cincinatti etc. Sydney traffic totally sucks in a 5km vicinity of the Anzac and Harbour bridges at peak hour.

Yeah, I've heard there's a lot of congestion around Paris, about 5000 guys lined up to get their turn on her. (Sorry couldn't resist).

drove in london a few months ago and that was an experience but the hardest thing was reading maps and trying to dodge the congestion zone where if you were to enter would cost you 8 pound and they all love to tailgate.

wasnt game to drive in germany for the fact they drive on the wrong side of the road and in the pasenger seat.

Scotland and Ireland were fine except that they all love to tailgate even when you are doing 90mph in a 80mph zone.

Driven in singapore as well, the sign posts are a bastard to read as they are all numbers with no town names on em so its easy to get lost and with no air-con you get real cranky fast.

I've driven in all Australian cities, and many in the US and Europe, but the weirdest was in Morocco. You see, no one does a license test there. The police consider it an insult to request one .. instead you pay your 100 dirham bribe and away you go.

I found my experiences in Gemini racing held me in good stead as it was who ever pushed the hardest got through the round about or intersection first. Much horn blowing and arm waving also helped. That said, despite all the seeming antagonism, there is no such thing as road rage.

Los Angeles freeways are a nightmare and 90% of the cars on the road would not be aloowd on roads over here, total Sh#tboxes. Shanghai in China is wild, no road rules. I asked an English speaking local who was our interpreter what the road rules were and he said "QUOTE" Whoever is the bravest, goes first.
