Yay! I finally made it. 10 years in the one job. I honestly find it hard to believe I've stayed in the one job for this long.
The only annoying bit? I can't take the 3mths off as they only pay on a prorata amount : What's that mean? If I took time off on long service I'd be on a 50%+ pay cut per fortnight : They average out my hours over the 10 years. 1 year I earnt just over $5000 rofl. I really cbf'd working for them that year and I had my own business. I'm going to get it paid out over 2-4 pays to minimise the tax hurt.

That's about the same amount I have left as well MoreHPformyXR6.
Would be nice to see if before Optus outsources their entire network to India.

I'm semi lucky. I work for the state gov't. They struggle to keep staff as they keep employing uni students. It's a pitty I don't be paid on the same wage/hours I've been working for almost 4 years. I've got a 64.5hour permanancy and a 65.5 hour roster that works out at just over $700pw take home.

We get ours through a fund,so you dont have to be ten years with the one employer, just ten years service in the industry, my second will be comin up in a couple of years, would have had it already if I hadn't done those few years travelling after my apprenticeship

Congrats brenx. Only 7 years and 8 months for me (lol, who's counting?) but i think can take 70% of LSL after 7 years, 80% after 8 etc etc
Yeah there are some OK paying jobs in the government these days. Unfortunately i have to wait until december before the next payrise :(

Never heard of this "averaging the hours over the 10 years" bit. I'd be checking out what the rules actually are. It would be the same as averaging out the salary you earned over the 10 years and paying that for lsl... Then again, 20 years in telstra (6 months lsl thankyou very much) paid at my final salary did me very well. Now 9 years to go this time round... |

Hi Brenx, good work on 10 years at one job. I'm 25 and coming up to 5 years in my job (Also a public servent).
Somedays.... It was my understanding that you can get paid half your normal rate and double your time off in government jobs? Otherwise you get your three months at full pay? Please excuse me if I am just naive. What you gunna do? Enjoy your time off, BA_Turbs

If I took time off, the lsl pay is so low I'd have to declare backruptcy.

I really need to look into this LSL stuff...
I was at my job for 4.5 years then left for 9 months. They kept pestering me to come back and I eventually did. I have been back there for about 4.5 to 5 years and am SO FRIGGEN over it. I dont know where to start with all the new law ect. Is it tough $hit for leaving or does it count as 10 years service???? Kev

"After 1 January 2006, where an employee's hours vary from week to week or where the employees hours have changed over the last 12 months, the employee's hours for calculating long service leave will be averaged over the preceding 12 months, or the preceding five years, whichever average hours are the greater." So averaged over 10 years is rubbish.
The state act determines the default rules for LSL, unless you have terms in an award or with your employer - which it appears you have Brenx. Normally you accrue 8 weeks after 10 years, so if you leave or your employment is terminated, you'd be paid out. At 15 years your LSL has increased to 13 weeks (3 months) and you can now take your leave. Different states have different LSL terms.

Been in the company for 13 years permanant for 12. I've got 349.35 hrs of long service, i used 2 weeks of back in '04 for my honeymoon. The waived the fact that at the time i was 9 years and 9 mths.
We can take LSL @ 7 years if we wish but better off leaving it till 10 years. Gain a couple of extra weeks that way. In reality we loose a little bit of money taking extended LSL due to tax and no %loading on LSL. I am not completely sure how many hours of LSL we accrue each year but i think it is in the vicinity of 2 weeks per year after pro-rata. |

Rang my pay officer today due to a $200 pay error in their favour of course :( Also found out my payout figure (nett, without corrections) is much more than I thought it'd be. Looks like a few small debts get sorted and the XB gets a mod or two
It works out my pay will be around $4000 next pay if the pay officers manager signs off on it. It's roughly $2500 for my 10 years of service. I'd do my usual with the XB mods. I'd rather get two or three small items than 1 big item. I have a roll cage, explosion proof blanket for the trans, fire extinquisher, extractors, rim widening, new slicks, caltracs or slide-a-links all on my list ;)

...yeah I too racked up 10 years of service a couple weeks ago. Although, it's a little embarrasing considering the other blokes I work with have been there for between 20-35 years, I try not to bring it up to often as I will cop heaps of crap...hehe
interesting points about pro-rata LSL....I could have taken it years ago...infact another guy I work with has only been there for 4 years and has already just about used up his entire lsl on a trip overseas last year. Having said that I guess its just a case of flexibility of who you work for/manpower issues/and wether your in a union or not. |
