I've used petrol for years for cleaning and never had this happen..
Maybe Commodores use 'special' fuel.

Same here. This new style 98ron stuff turns my skin white for awhile but I've been using petrol for many years to clean parts.

I use to use methanol to clean all my parts until i had an Allergic reaction, as in a heart attack. The methanol had poisoned my blood stream and caused the heart attack. I don't even use petrol anymore i use white spirits instead.

this is true i h cleaned parts with degreaser once when i was an apprentice and soaked my hands in it . my hands went completely numb . upon ringing poisons information cetre . they told me that this happens when all the fats and oils become become dissolved in your hands . the bad part is your hands go numb . and your liver and kidneys and heart all work hard trying to filter it out of the blood for a few hours . and if you are healthy you will recover . or may die on the day. the good part is . if you recover which most do . the fat will grow back in about 5 weeks.

Though now that I think about it, we use petrol to clean parts with at the bus depot, and having read the bits about blood poisoning and so forth, I'm starting to worry that maybe washing our hands in it after having cut outselves or something isn't such a good idea. :

I spill petrol on my fingers everytime I fill up the lawnmower. Did I have any feeling left? Probably not - although I think that was due to the vibration of the lawn mower if anything.

I am amazingly stupid when it comes to cleaning my hands and arms.
Turps and metho worked wonders on any paint I happened to get on my hands. Petrol is good for general grease and whatnot, brake cleaner is better. Here's a massive hint at life though. Brake cleaner freezes your skin after a while (must be the liquid turning to a gas or something). Now in small doses you don't freeze up or anything, it's a little cold but not too bad (well I'm sure it's bad, but yeah, whatever). Anyway. DON'T USE IT IN THE SHOWER. Holy mother of god that was painful. Hot water + cold brake cleaner = PAIN. Those who know me well know pain doesn't bother me too much, but bloody hell I was rolling around on the floor that time. It literally felt like my skin was shrinking. Not good! Though now days I prefer to use soap for such matters. Get some proper HD soap for it, it won't kill your skin or god know what else. Everyone is going to laugh at me now, I know it. Well I'd been under the car all day changing the clutch, I was covered in crap. And needed to be somewhere in 15 minutes. Needless to say I was late. |

I'm so trying to fight the urge to ask WHY you had brake cleaner in the shower...
Oops, just did. : EDIT: Hmmm, nevermind, didn't read the last bit of the post.

Yeah I was just trying to cut corners, I figured I could multi task rather than washing them in the basin. Stupid, but so funny looking back.

I'm not surprised petrol did this... the amount of nasty chemicals in it, at least one of them is bound to do something bad. Probably the toluene or benzene in it. Neither of these is particularly good for you.
On a related note, how many of you wear gloves when handling automotive products such as grease etc? Not many I'd imagine. Neither do I but you really should - things like wheel bearing grease are often lithium-based and repeated or prolonged skin contact to them isn't recommended. |

and the high level of testosterone that occurs when you put us near a motor or any related motor products, causes our brains to go into "Im invincible" mode. Its akin to putting a set of instructions in your hands that came with the flat pack furniture you just bought. Do we read it? Of course not. we just grab the dodgy mild steel 5mm allen key that came with it and spend the next 2 hours swearing.
