for an extra 10bucks, you cant go past the 12gb cap, and you get the extra speed. I have been known to use 500mb in a day. EASY! Google earth should work with either though. Depends on how much you use it, and how much you download. But once you get broardband you'll probably find that you download more...
Ive got 1.5mb connection speed, its great =) no complaints.

If you do go broadband. Go the 12GB plan. 500mb isn't very much (you'll use it very quickly). I'm assuming this is ADSL and not cable. The futher your connected from the exchange the slower your broadband will be. I'm not 100% sure how ADSL is connected to the computer but I think that you have two options (if you have an external modem) to plug it in. One will be by USB and the other by ethernet connection. I would choose the ethernet, even if it means you need to purchase an ethernet card, because USB isn't very stable.
Also do a search as I remeber someone was asking this a while ago. |

I agree on broadband you'll consume more bandwidth. On dialup I was doing 1-2gb per month. Not on 256/64 broadband $59.95. I consume 4gb->12gb per month. Depends whats going on and what I'm going. I tend to use most of my usage downloading updates. Quite often I get lumbered with PC's to upgrade. Plug them into the hub and off we go.
I'm looking at churning in Nov as my contracts up. I can save myself $10 and go 512/128 with usage around 15/20gb. have a look at http://www.whirlpool.net.au

Ethernet is a network protocol. All it is, is how the modem talks to the computer. So it woint matter what company your internet comes from it just depends on if the modem has that capability. It's probably an internal modem, if thats the case than your only worry is what plan you get. |

Its a type of connector, its the actual plug that you plug into your computer. Most will have it, if not the cards arent that dear.

I had 512 down, that was ok on google earth
now with 1500 it runs smooth. If you are going to be downloading full length movies and music, get at least the 512 12gb $39.95 one. The only additional changes that may occur if you go over the 12GB limit. Keep shopping around to see what would be the best bang for your buck. Try to find a plan that won't charge you for going over, but will lower the speed you download at(this speed will still be faster than dialup). http://www.whirlpool.net.au/ could help you better Beware, Limewire and TorrentSpy.com/Azureus will be your new friend. |

You can look up your dialup download from your provider. If you go broadband basicly multipule your dailup download by 10 and that might be enough. I have tried 256/512 and 1.5 and not noticed that much diffence while surfing but when downloading it helps heaps.
go the 12Gb. Ethernet is your netowrk connection, most modems can do ethernet or USB go the Ethernet option if you can.

I'm with Exetel (NSW only) $25.00 pm with 2gig downloads 256kbs. Free time (no download charge) between 2am & 10am. 6 month contract, not 12 or 24 like the 'Big boys' Even less if you connect your STD phone calls with them. The only drawback that I've found in the 18mths that I've been with them is that the help desk only works office hours, but for the prices I can live with that

Downloading movies / music will get you done by the riaa / mpaa etc... :P - but that doesn't stop me!
Yeah, I think TPG is ok for what you get....bad side is a crap service(connection wise) - if you want a crap plan, but a great/fast/reliable service go bigpond...never a down time for me, and always was fast. I am on TPG 30GB for $60/month - 1500k - 256k |

Bigpond isn't that flash. It has too many users for the bandwidth available. These $29.95 plans saw to that. I'm on Bigpond. Have been on cable and now on ADSL. Quiet often the mail servers down, so is dns and best one of all the authentication server. The only reason I'm on Bigpond is Telstra are shifty. No-one but Telstra could connect me to ADSL. Funny that isn't it. I've spent around 5 years combined on Bigpond.
I'd love a 1500/512 connection but can't justify the $. 512/128 was good enough last time (cable).

TRy this lot http://www.tsninternet.com.au/webpages/ I think they are Australia wide $29.95 unlimited 256k, 512 $49.95 month no extra charges for extra downloads just shaping/slowing. I'm with them and hardly a problem.
Sorry all accounts Unlimited,no shaping. 1.5 $69.95 Generally very good service. 24hr help desk. Most Modems around $100 include ethernet cable and 1 line filter normally around $15 but you may need 2 if you have 2 lines into the house. Very easy to install its just the jargon that sounds scarry. Watch out for the cheaper intro providers as they are often dearer in the long run. Give Big Puddle a miss, not cheap and lots of gimmicks to spend your money on later. Just got home and checked what I had written,DOH,hope its right now.

I use AANET. Its pretty good, with 512 speed and 1 gig downloads for $29.00. If you go over to 2 complete gig, it is an extra $3.00. If you're not a MAD downloader, its is a great plan.

no but it wouldn't surprise me as telstra own everything and hate thier competitors and competitors customers so much that they go out of thier way to cause problems at others expense .

I dont think it's a case of going out of their way, just the usual Telstra (lack of) service. Here's part of the FAQ from Exetel...
"How Long Does It Take To Activate My ADSL Service? If there is an ADSL port available at your local exchange it will take, on average, around 7 working days to activate your telephone line for ADSL. If there are no ports available at your exchange your application will be put in a queue on hold until ports become available on your exchange. The wait time for ports to become available is variable from a few weeks to several months (in rare cases)" And of course if you move the whole activation process (and charges) starts over again.

Bigpond cable here, the only good thing is the unlimited DLs. Speed is so-so for cable and tech support is about as useful as a submarine in a rice paddy.
