Default Can you subscribe to a thread that you haven't posted to?

I like subscriptions. Tick the box and the site advises you when a posting has been made to a thread of interest.

The only problem is that I can't see how to subscribe to a thread unless I am posting to it. Am I missing something or is it just not possible? Can it be made possible?
