While those numbers still look bad, the 4x4s saw a welcome increase, Hilux 2800 and Ranger 2499
are still underwhelming but show a nice rebound is happening and Toyota with over 14,400 sales have
already put the worst behind them. All the other brands saw increases but still feeling the hurt until
retail sales recover, that's tied to job security and everyone getting back to work - fingers crossed.

I wonder now that Australia is officially in a recession, if this will keep the brakes on new vehicle sales? Even though it's very uncertain times, will Australian's continue to spend like they're not really heading into an economic downturn?

If dealers can get plenty of 4x4 XLTs and Wildtraks then those sales will do OK for EOFY,
but I don't like their chances of getting all of them made and shipped to Aus dealers in time

There is still a good number of Australian jobs associated with the new car market. From he docks, to the detailers, sales people, office staff, service staff. Yeah, the new car market has no effect on our economy alright.

Why do you assume the sale of a new car results in "all the profit" going overseas. Apart from the sale between the local importer and the overseas manufacturer evey other step in the sale, service and repair of vehicles sold here results in the majority of that money plus all the taxes incurred from GST, Luxury tax, company tax and employee wages kept here.

A mate I know really really well

, works at the local toyota dealer, he reckons they are on target this month to beat there previous monthly sales record, set back in 2008 where coal boom helped set their sales record, something to do with government tax rebates for fleet and business owners, That is just one dealer though, not that it is anything to go by for the rest of the country and dealers.

In the Covid 19 thread I made the following observations:

(I made the comment that a few months prior to 15/4/20 there were only around 200,000 listings.)

15/3/20 - 200,000 cars listed.

15/4/20 - 230,000 cars listed on Carsales.

15/6/20 - Carsales down to 171,000 listings.

24/6/20 - Carsales down to 162,000 listings.

In uncertain times you hold your cards and wait to see how it plays out.

Anyone buying a used car in the next couple of months is mad, there should be blood in the market place soon and people will be forced to reduce prices.

Commercial vehicles will move. Ford struggling to get enough Rangers to fill the demand. Transit rising too.

Hum more so its EOFY.....and the Govco immediate tax benefit is a winner.
Sure some retail would be incl but look at Hilux/Ranger - good numbers under the circumstance but its more so Fleet/ABN holders I'd expect.

Really, it just wouldn't matter if you had to buy now you do - especially through May/June as mentioned above due to EOFY and tax rebates.

As you know I bought a low k euro last weekend, great covid deal and EOY, your not mad to wait, waiting at times you miss out or it may not even pan out as you quote.
You just do it when you can.
Tell you another thing due to covid, as we've seen Banks are making it much harder to borrow/loans etcetc, I'm re financing one of our buildings and the amount of paperwork required is like double, and luckily we have been a good payer and profitable business for years so our record is top and its still a bigger PIA.
Good luck to those not with good records wishing to lease a new bargain car in the future.

Maybe after Sept when the welfare supprt gets pulled new cars and house's will fall ?

But I don’t think new cars and houses are being bought by people on Centrelink. Secondhand cars definitely, but there are bucketloads of people out there who have the cash, or have worked nonstop though covid without a break. I think general retail will suffer in sept, as that’s where the Centrelink money is going.
