following article shows that Victoria closely followed by NSW are looking to introduce a 4c per kilometre Road User charge which will initially be focusing on electric vehicles but will flow down in time to all road users due to falling tax income.
https://www.theage.com.au/politics/f...20-p53cdj.html How do we think this will play out? log book system perhaps or annual check of sorts on a vehicles speedo before it will be re-registered?

been there done that.
Back in the 7's or 80's (maybe earlier) all trucks and buses paid a 'road user tax' on diesel, I think they still do in NZ. Basically diesel at the bowser was cheaper but the user had to pay a tax, back in those days there was a proliferation of car diesels, they were nearly all HV's. They only paid tax on diesel used 'o road', so farmers in paddocks were exempt, log truck 'off road' were exempt but they had to pay for the 'on road' component. Tip trucks were the same. From memory they had to record the data via hub-o-meters, or was that NZ? LOL With the take up of diesel 4x4 cars it was decided to tax everyone at the bowser but with those using it 'off road' (for work purposes) can claim a rebate from the government, I think that still stands

NZ does use a hub based system for monitoring of the road use tax for all diesel powered vehicles but the trade off is the lower pump price.

they did a 4c for 4 years b4 the sydney olimpics, i dont think it was ever removed . they just want more and more, the latest is the war on water , gov and corporations bought the water rights and now making its value very high by holding it from the farmers , if they start slugging us for driving then we should all go on strike , why are we paying so much just to live in this country

https://www.eroad.co.nz/nz/products/...lectronic-ruc/ Light vehicles under 3500kg go off the odometer. The upside of this is if your vehicle is old enough you can disable the odometer to get around RUC. This makes for cheap motoring. Where I am 91 is currently $2.32/l while diesel is $1.65/l plus $76 per 1000km for LVs. Running a diesel LV is negligible. I wouldn’t be surprised if governments in the future introduce an RUC type system for all ICE vehicles to subsidise and encourage the uptake of EVs. |

I can remember people doing that when they hired the service station utes back in the day of cable odometers. Not that I would do it. ![]()

What an awesome idea.
Paying 4c a kilometer, on top of a toll to travel on roads the government didn't even build.

so if you are poor and live further away from cities you get penalised more for driving to work even if there are no trains or busses?
they should just penalise people who use cars in cities like they do in london

We still pay through the nose for diesel, and the RUC charges always seem to be increasing every year. Plus in auckland we get hit with a 10 cents a litre congestion tax on petrol.

I remember being in my mates diesel 626 circa 2004/5 and getting pulled over by the cops, he made us drive up to the next set of lights and come back because he believed our odometer was disconnected. It was hahaha, my mate got reamed in court over that. He disconnected it after each wof and when they went through the wof records he was travelling less than 100km between wofs despite it failing for worn out tyres etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

That aside... If we keep allowing greedy councils and developers to subdivide the crap out of everything, then congestion and over use is the sour fruit of what we have sown. Making people pay for using poorly thought out infrastructure wont solve anything. If you “invite” people to come join the party in the big cities, then be prepared to put on a show. The govt should find a way to put up or shut the @&$k up.

At 4 cents per km I’m up for $1,200 a year, up from the current $690. Assuming excise is removed I’ll save $1800 a year on petrol. (30,000km a year, BFII XR6 Ute)
I’ll save $1290 a year, which means this won’t happen as they’re not going to introduce a policy where we come out ahead. |

The 4 cent comment is in the article, I can see this in time being translated to all road users, just not sure how they will enforce it
