Home security camera with HDD

Hey guys,

Hope this is an OK topic to seek advice on Ford Forums?

I'm going to moving to Alice Springs in the next few weeks and as I hear there are quite a few break ins up there. Figure I can't prevent one, but it would be good to have some video to provide to the police if I do get burgled.

Given I'll be relying on my mobile for internet, I really need a setup with a remote hard disc or similar so that I can have:
- One camera in the kitchen and lounge area
- One camera in the yard/carport area
- A recorder box in the roof cavity that I can access if I do get burgled

So hoping someone else may have gone down this line and can recommend a system?

Any Dahua or HIK Vision system will do the job. We have a 4 camera Dahua using 6mp turret cameras and we're very pleased. Night vision is fantastic.

I have a Swann system:

The bad; the remote internet monitoring does not work with all routers, is a pain to set up and is not reliable.

The good; other than the remote monitoring everything else is OK and as they are so common parts are readily available (and where nor 3D print files to make some bits exist) and there is plenty of online support from other users. Also easy to add a larger drive as I have done

I bought 2 of these for outside my gates and in yard looking at my garage... Great little cams ,wiFi works from over a 100metres, and watch on my or wife’s mobiles anywhere!
I use 64gb mini sd cards, and I believe next model up have cloud storage for video?

I don't have any but I have seen the video from the cameras system sold at Aldi a while back and it was excellent, better than cameras 10 times the price.

And I get to see a LOT of CCT footage. I might pick them up for myself next time they have them.

Keep an eye out for when they get it back.

The Swann Cameras also seem popular and are readily available. 1080HD 4 canner set with 1tb hard drive can be had for around $400, with 8 camera set for around $650.

Ive installed swann wireless systems before and they do work well. Just need to get power to the cameras. But im not a security installer, im an electrician. So for the few systems i have fitted, they work. Remote monitoring i dont know anything about, i leave that to IT people, but getting footage from the dvr, thats simple enough. If you want full on cameras that you can move from a pc or remotely, then thats a different ballpark going poe and these days, the bees knees involves cat 6a cabling and stuff. The days of analogue, running an rg59 coax and a twin for power are drying up.

I've got 6 HIK Vision outdoor dome cameras that are weather and vandal proof run to a 8 channel HDD box that is capable of holding 2HDDs. I've only got 1 in it but it is capable of recording about 3 weeks of non stop recording from 6 cameras at max HD resolution. Night vision is good and the system is remote access capable although I don't have it hooked to the net so can't give an opinion of the quality of the connection or software. All up it cost me about $1600 with all the ethernet cables and HDD. Most of the cost was for the cameras which are about $220 each on Ebay. The cost is in making them vandal proof me thinks.
My only complaint would be the operating system in the 8 channel box is slower than a wet week and can lag when you start editing and saving footage. I have an external SSD which we save footage on then gets put away to keep safe.
