I'll admit I haven't seen much TV lately, but turned on the telly tonight and see the advert for the new Camry...
Now look...my son has an Aurion, and while it's a good car it's bland...white goods on wheels. Not exciting to look at, and neither is the Camry-clone of it. Never have been. So what the hell have they been putting in the water at Toyota lately?? First they spit out the unexpected and excellent 86, then they restyle the Corolla from a boring grannies car into something that actually looks good. Now they give the tiresome Camry/Aurion the same treatment... http://www3.toyota.com.au/camry What in gods name is going on at Toyota...? Have they suddenly discovered this thing called "styling"...? Sad to see that while our locally manufactured cars are winding down, the rest of the competition just seems to be coming into it's stride... |

Looks like every other Kia, Hyundai, Mazda, etc scurrying about on our roads today.
If this is what excites people these days, I'd rather just kill myself already. |

About as bland as the similar offering from Our local producers. Modern 'safe' cars are boring and in my opinion...which is not a fact...so is falcon since the AU...ok since the x series coups.
Isn't it nice we all have differing tastes in cars. JP |

I actually prefer the look of the first model of the current car (ie 2006 - 2011 or whatever)
Not saying it looks exciting or drives like anything other than an appliance though....

It's hard to look past a badge for alot of people (including me most of the time).....I do get what your saying.
I'd buy a Subaru BRZ before a Toyota 86. Looking past the badge there are are some nice cars out there that arn't built by Ford. |

Toyota's are bland. Full stop. But until they put a market leading engine in the bland, they will always be seen as "grandpa's car". Styling may well sell a car, but who here doesn't look under the bonnet? That's where it matters. Image and perception.

I agree. Supra was something, but that was a long time ago. Since then, all Toyota have done is create quality cardboard. Turbo is a dirty word to them. Excitement and Toyota are like oil and water. If Mitsubishi didn't have the evo, same boat.

Fords are much better than Toyotas anyway, look how much more powerful a Kuga is than a RAV4 and how much better a Ranger is over a Hilux.

They don't look too good in my opinion, but much better than the old shape that tends to blend in well with other modern cars. It was a blessing to see a XB ute today stand out amongst the crowd!

Well fear not because the "updated" Aurion has just been released and pretty well hasn't changed at all. Apart from the fact it now starts at a $10k premium over the new camry. WTF are they thinking.
As for all the comments about image and them being bland etc I'm not sure if Toyota care what you think. All they are care about are sales figures. Considering they sell almost twice as many cars as their nearest competitor why would they change anything? 2014 total sales 1 Toyota 203,501 2 Holden 106,092 3 Mazda 100,704 4 Hyundai 100,011 5 Ford 79,703

I'd buy a Hilux over a Ranger as I don't want a "truck"

My main criteria at the time was i just wanted a fairly comfortable cheap to service, quiet reliable car that did every thing reasonably well and i could do the minimum maintenance myself and know there where no real weak spots in the design of the car(ie things that you expect to work without trouble for the life of the vehicle do so ). your perspective changes as you become an old fart. |
