Default A new WINDOWS scam?

My wife had a phone call from someone at 'WINDOWS' tonight saying they had detected a lot of viruses and trojans in our computer, he had a foreign accent.
they had asked her to quickly log into our computer and she just had to follow a few simple instructions.
she thought it was a bit suss so she said hold on and put me on.
i said hello and the caller didnt answer me, i said it again and then they hung up.
i wonder what they are trying to get people to do?

I had the same a few days ago. A foreign sounding woman called up and said my computer was found to be infected with viruses. I laughed and hung up.

I then did a quick google search to see if this scam is common and found this:

They were warning people about this scam the other day on the radio. Indian person calling people and telling them that virus's have been detected on their computer. They guide you to a website that scans your computer and then shows you the amount of virus's on your computer. If you fall for the scam they charge you $385 to repair.
Hope no one falls for it, but at the same time I hope they call me. Love to have some fun with these guys.

First the African scams, now the Indians are in on it. Can only see it getting worse.
At least the eastern europeans are too busy writing viruses, the asians are too busy making pirated copies of everything, and the rest of the third world don't know what a computer is? yet!

Do these Indians ever say your name or are they just ringing random numbers?
Next time they ring, ask them who are they after? A name?

This is almost the same at the old contractor scam. The contractor " working in the area " notices something wrong with your home and decides to call in and offers to take a look-see for free... he further inspects the property and points out more and more things that " need addressing "... falling for him charm and his good nature.. because he made the effort to inform you, you had an issue.. the hands are shaked, the checks are signed and before you know it, you've had 7 different things fixed that didn't need repairing at all.

I would tell then I have both tinting and fly screens on my windows and that I use Glen 20 to keep the viruses at bay, the Trojans are in the bathroom with the lube and then ask them if they want to come over to see the Trojans at work...LOL

This one used my name. No doubt it's the same as all these telemarketers though. I don't think they said they were from Windows though, they said some other name

You can buy lists of phone numbers if you know where to look. Also telstra give their phone books away.

I just had one of these phone calls, again saying I had downloaded a virus on my to my computer and it was affecting my computers performance. They only knew my last name.
Luckily I had seen this thread, so I knew what was going on.

I know a person who fell for this a few days ago.

They charge you $119 through paypal then get you to install a VNC client or something like Teamviewer and then proceed to "fix" your computer.

After leaving his computer for an hour the Indian guy was still working away on it. I'd say installing keyloggers, checking bank accounts, saved passwords and who knows what else.

I think the main success will be with elderly people, as this man was.

I had a call offering me a free TV or Laptop, apparently one of my mates reccomended that I might be interested. Yeah right. I mean Pop-up ads was one thing, but calling me on my mobile with this crap, wtf is the world coming to.

just had our third phone call from the scammers, seems like we get one a month now
they asked if i was mr xxxx (wife's maiden name) we got married in january so she is no longer ms xxxx, lol
i said no, they asked for ms xxxx, i said no sorry no-one here by that name either
he then asked if we had a computer, i said no sorry
he then hung up...
i might have to have a story ready next time and see if i can drag them along and waste their time
might ask them for their email addy and link it to some dodgy sites so they get spammed

I ask to speak to their supervisor, then put the cordless next to the main handset... makes all sorts of squealing and racket... or if i'm in a good mood i'll just throw the phone into the bedroom.

They get nasty though, friends mum had one call her back, "BEACH!", then hung up... he couldn't even say the profanity properly!

Reminds me of our friends boss, he owns a blinds business, gets them talking, seems really interested, then starts trying to sell them blinds, when they get annoyed he simply says "well you're trying to sell me stuff, why can't I sell you stuff?"

Thats awesome.

I was in a telstra shop where one of my mate's works and they had a telemarketer call. He told the guy to just hang on the line while he went and got a pen. We left it on loundspeaker for close to 30mins before he realised we weren't coming back

I had one from my windows messenger (formerly MSN) account.
They went on with a promise of new touch screen phone, laptop or TV. Cause apparently my friend had got one through them... I told them i dont want a touch screen phone, bought a new laptop and TV recently.
So the indian guy asks "so what do you want" and i told him "a russian bride"
.....silence
Then he asks what i spend on net and mobile. and it was less than he was offering so his reply was "errr, you have it all then" and i told him "except a russian bride, i'll keep an eye on the mailbox"
*click* he hung up and i got 4 calls a day for a week..

We get the door knockers wanting us to sign up with OPTUS. The last one we had went through the usual pitch. He asked who I'm with and what plan I'm on and they can offer free local phone calls and great internet packages. So I tell them I pay $69.95 a month, I'm on Naked DSL so I get free local calls and I have 150gb a month Download limit on ADSL 2. Plus I don't pay any line rental. He looked at his folder for a moment, then looked back at me and said, "Oh. Ok, thanks for your time anyway". And he walked away.

I casuallly asked who she was after she asked for Mr Re:"*(), the previuos owner of our house 8 years ago, politely told them sorry, no live here anymore, asked my name and told her my name was Master Bates, took her 5 minutes to figure I had pulled one over her!!
