Default I bought a bike today.

It is a Haro Escape.

I don't know anything about bikes and did no research.... spur of the moment thing...

So now that I have already bought it, does anyone know anything about bikes and think its ok?... :

Also is there any good places to ride near Pakenham, just fairly easy stuff to start with.

Cheers

Craig

well, its got wheels and handlebars and stuff, so I guess its ok.
Have fun!

if you want to take a trip out to boronia, go to bmxmad. They will fill you in on places to go, and all accessories etc.

I know a little about bikes, I used to know a lot but haven't really been in to it for a few years. Haro always made good quality strong light frames and equipped them with decent components. Your's seems like a good middle of the road bike and is great for a beginner as once you get a bit more experience it will still do the job.

Ive got a Haro Escape 8.3 (2004 model). Its had a hard life and I havent been able to break it other than the I beam seat that it came with. Youll have a heap of fun on it and it will handle anything you do on it.

Ive just bought a Haro Xeon dually. I was getting a sore back on the hardtail.

Thanks for your replies everyone,

I also posted on a mtb forum I found and they all said the same things as you guys, so I am really happy as it should be a good bike and I got it for what I think is a great price!

Just got back from my first ride, it was GREAT! I can't wait until I get some coordination back and get used to the bike and set it up properly.

When I got back I quickly sprayed it with the hose on mist and then with a hand towel dried the main areas apart from the mechanical parts as they have lubricant on them, if you get some of the lubricant on the towel and then accidentially wipe other metal/plastic etc parts of the bike do you think it could damage/degrade it? (maybe it is petrolium based or something which would be bad for plastics?...).

Guy at the shop agreed if I hose it lightly and put it in the garage and let it drip dry it should be fine and keep lube upto the chain etc.

Is there anything/tricks I should know about looking after the bike? (do I need to hand dry it like I did?).

Thanks guys

Craig

I never bothered to dry mine, it drips dry, I just keep everything lubed up. Never had any rust problems or paint damage.

Have fun with your new toy,

I really think it will get a lot of use for a variety of reasons, however you never know sometimes you use something for a while and get over it, don't think that will happen as not having a bike has been killing me even though I'd only ever had bad ones.

It was said earlier, Haro went down hill in a big way in the mountain bike scene, and they have only started to put some half decent bikes on the market 2007-2008.
I have just recently sold my bike which was a $8500-$9000 downhill mountain bike (not a Haro) and I miss riding it at the moment, even though I never had the time anyway, back on topic, as stated in the link your bike is more of a street bike/jump bike, If you just plan to ride it in the bush/nasho, fitness rides etc, you may want to opt for a more suitable bike like a cross country bike (XC).

Stockel if your doing jumps the bike is good for you (depending on your weight and quality of parts), but being a (Hardtail) its going to be a bit punishing on your body/back/joints as you have no suspension in the rear, and majority of these bike do not have the correct gearing for riding in the bush.
eg. hardtails tend to only have one chainring/sprocket, on the rare occassion you will find two chainrings but these will be found on cheaper do it all models that dont really do it all, eg hardtail/XC jump bike. (its one or the other).
Stockel, in my opinion you have bought the wrong bike, but you can still ride it anywhere, just not in comfortably.

Hardtail = Jump/Street bike, no rear suspension.
XC = all mountain/cross country, average suspesion travel 3", 4", 5 inches.
Freeride = the do it all bike, 6 inches-9 inches of wheel travel front and back.
Downhill = dedicated for downhill, 8 inches-12 inches of wheel travel.

With a $9$$$ bike you would want to wash it once a week and keep things all lubed up and tight.

do not hose the forks rubber bushes/seals, as the water will go into the lowers and mix with the oil, plus you will be washing dirt in their as well and the seals wont last the year and then your forks will shite themselves and you will need to send them away for a service and get new seals and bushes.

Hi mate,
I am pretty much riding it everywhere and I think thats some of the problem when you start getting into better bikes the more narrowly focused they seem to become, I love it but that could just because I don't know anything about bikes

Is it ok to just hose the forks with a really soft mist? (Thats how I hose the whole bike).

Thanks

Craig

Nice, can't believe I didn't see this earlier! Welcome to the fray!!!

Not going to say anything about Haro, enough said already!

I used to race DH on a Trek Y-Glide Deluxe, at the time it was the bomb, now it is a bomb!!!! LOL I sold it a few years back after doing my back, told not to ride DH again!!!!! Picked up a DBR BSX Comp, nice DJ rig but no DH Bike! Got that as a compromise, could still go riding with the boys, just not as full on!

Anyway man I think you will really get a lot out of the MTB scene, keep watching Farkin too, good site! If you got cable keep your eye out for Chosen Line top show made by Glen Jacobs and the boys from Cairns!
