Hi all,
I am thinking about buying a laptop but was thinking.......If I have a modem on it's own (not connected to computer) can I connect the laptop to it wirelessly? Also if I connect to a wireless zone (hot spot I think), how does this work with internet bill? Thanks,

The modem you have...you mean its a DSL modem? Is it a wireless DSL modem? If it is, then yes you can connect striaght to it from a laptop.
Wireless hotsposts depend on who operates them. I assume you mean the ones in city centers and places like McDonalds and Starbucks. Common ones are Telstra for example. usually they work where you connect to their wireless signal and you will be taken to their website where you have to buy "time". With the Telstra one, if you are with Telstra mobile, then it gets charged to your phone bill.

So it's not where you have a wireless connection in your computer (for the hotspots)?

the wireless card in a laptop is only to connect to wireless networks.
for home use, you would need to buy a wireless router and/or modem if you want DSL. In the city/airport/cafe where the hotspots are, you use the wireless card in your laptop to connect to their network and pay to use the internet.

Yeah, and on top of that - Wireless hotspots, when you need to pay, are usually pretty expensive. A few ISPs have 'global roaming' wireless as well, which usually involves paying quite a lot of money and buying a card that slots into your laptop with a SIM card inside it.

We have a desktop PC and a laptop.
Our desktop pc is in the computer room/spare room, our laptop usually lives in the lounge room. The laptop has 802.11g (WiFi) wireless built in, and the desktop pc has a USB WiFi dongle (not much bigger than a USB memory stick). The desktop PC has the ADSL modem that came with the kit when I connected to optus. It is shared and firewalled on the desktop pc. So basically the desktop is switched on 24/7 and anytime you turn the laptop on, it picks up the network and you're on the net.
