Default Bring Back State of Origin (AFL)?

Should State of Origin return? Who would like to see the days of state patriotism come back? It seems to work in Rugby League as it's alwaays a great success, so what went wrong in the AFL? I reckon they should bring it back and make it work.

GO THE VICS!!! :

Bring it back, but only every four years.
The way the AFL players were once they played for the state once they didn't care because they achieved getting their jumper.
At least every four years would make it more desirable for the players. I guess you could split it up with two different states playing each other so it would be on every year.

We were discussing this at work the other day (probably because of the league origin being on) I miss it, I went to the game where Ted Whitten did the lap in his car and it still is to this day the best football game I have seen, a lot of emotion and seeing Lockett and Ablett in the same forward line was fantastic. It's unfortunate though that the coaches are so much against playing their big guns, it would really need the full support of all the clubs otherwise it would fail again.

What is required is to get rid of the pre-season cup as it is irrelevant and nobody cares who wins it. Replace it with a "State of Origin Cup" which runs in parallel with regular season (such as the FA Cup runs in parallel with the premier league in English soccer).

My preference. Have two groups of three states. In each group each state plays each other twice - one home and one away game. That is a total of six games per group. Then have the state of origin final between the teams which finish on top of each group.

Example:

Group 1

Victoria
Queensland
Western Australia

Group 2

New South Wales
South Australia
Tasmania (+NT+ACT+imports?)

Each year the AFL can mix the two groups so that the same three teams don't play each other year in year out.

That is a competition I would be willing to watch.

Would QLD and NSW have enough to fill a side, I think NSW would but not QLD.

Otherwise a real good idea, the clubs would be for it if there was enough prize money at stake.

I couldnt have said it better myself!

I reckon the way it used to be with one match per year was really good, and was only ruined by the idiot coaches who decided not to risk their star players, thereby not taking it seriously, leading to its demise.

Have it like it was, but with rules in place to prevent coaches protecting certain players, make sure its taken seriously and make it a desirable thing so that players will want to play in it.

I loved it because SA has done pretty well in State of Origin in the past, and nothing better than SA boys (all coming back from Vic teams anyway) giving the Vics a good pasting!

Cobra, if you dont like SA where you LIVE, then perhaps you should move back to Vic!!!! :

PS Dont get me started on the pansy game rules at the moment, sometimes I feel like complaining to the AFL about it but I know it wont get me anywhere. The game has turned into a soft boys' game, the next thing they will remove all body contact, players will wear protective gear and you will be fined $9874529847593 for running into another player (or stupid umpires who get in the way). Tackling will be banned altogether, as will contested marking as it results in one player coming into contact with another most of the time.

Nothing like a good melee or box on to get the crowd going. Doesnt hurt anyone, and its good for spirit. Lets face it, you have 44 big, testosterone filled, competetive blokes at the top of their physical condition out there, performing for a passionate crowd... let them get some of it out of their systems with a bit of biffo I say...

Why bother?
Vic teams play South Australian teams every week now.

Why risk your best players on games that dont mean anything?

But I do agree the game is over officiated, too many whistle happy umpires.

There is a difference between "Vic teams play South Australian teams" and "a team of Victorians versus a team of South Australians"

In Queensland, we always have known NSW as Mexicans, i think its in reference to the USA having the mexicans south of the border, hence, anyone south of a border over here would be a Mexican!

My idea would be to play it on the weekend before the Grand Final, give both grand final teams an extra week off, that way you'll have 14 teams to pick from. I don't reckon scrapping pre-season comp would be good idea as it is a good chance to test rule changes. State of Origin teams would be the same format as last time, VIC, SA, WA and All Stars

I don't care when they play, perhaps make it half way through the season like it was and not have a split round.

Ohh, if Vics are Mexicans, then South Aussies are Texans. A few Bumpkin towns and the rest desert!!! :P

That's a good point...

State of Origin in League boombed because the state based team back then was based around the team you currently played (i.e. - because there was no NSWRL team in QLD, it was the best of the teams in the NSWRL vs the best in the teams of the QLD local competition) - and QLD always got smashed (obviously).

State of Origin boombed because of the passion of QLD trying to proove to NSW that League didn't revolve around their state. I think State of Origin in AFL would be a good idea, I just see an issue at the moment in it's "origin". Don't get me wrong - this isn't a go at AFL, but at the moment (or the last 5 years anyhow) it hasn't dominated the AFL. The other states don't need to proove anything to VIC. It's a great idea - I just think it would struggle. But if the fans will turn up - go for it! It'd be a shame (and a blow to the game) to see it fail again though.

The interesting thing is, that all my AFL mates who hate League, put on their QLD jumpers and go nuts at State of Origin - that's the beauty, no matter what code you follow, State of Origin is special in QLD and NSW, and everyone gets involved. I just can't see myself, or my League mates getting that involved in an AFL state of origin. But, good luck if it goes ahead - proove me wrong, make me want to go to an AFL match!

I think the AFL should play the International rules games every few years and bring back the state of origin at the end of every season.
