Sounds like BS to me. But anyway, most assault rifle rounds will make kevlar look like butter as they go in you from the front, and come out the other side.

body armour is an important part of combat operations, because bullets dont have to land on target to kill. Ricochets, shrapnel, exploding masonry, these are just some of the things that a soldier has to contend with, all of which, kevlar will stop, all of which can kill.

Saying they dont stop assault rifle rounds and are thus useless is ignorant Steffo, but I assume tactical warfare wasnt covered in this weeks edition of Wheels Magazine.

The kevlar itself to my knowledge would not be too effective against a 7.62mm round but the ceramic plates in the front and rear of the ballistic vest will help to save lives.

I would not be surprised if the Defence Force has stuffed up on this.

If anyone saw the doco on sbs last week "Gunner Palace", they would see the yanks have the same sort of issues. This time more with light skinned vehicles, but all comes down to one thing, besides poor management, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

That was a great watch. Really twisted and was a good demonstration of the quagmire the west has found itself in. Spend hundreds of billions on a war and skimp on armour?? WTF?

IIRC there has always been questions regarding US and Australian armour for infantry?

When I was in Nam we did not have any type of body armour at all.When on patrol with our blokes we did not have an option anyway. But when on patrol with US (marines,reg army etc ) we always wore flack jackets(As the risk factor went up 10 fold) a jacket once saved me from severe damage when an electronic mine was set off and schrapnel schreded the back of my jacketcausing only minor damage . My son is in Iraq at the moment and told me that he does'nt know anyone in the ozdf who's not wearing body armour..
