We are the world's biggest coal exporter! See this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal (scroll down a fair bit) I mean, let's promote 'green' tech/solutions as much as possible, I'm all for it. But to think that giving modest rewards for buying green cars will make any difference is a joke while we export the black dirt in the volumes that we do. ...because if we don't export it, then I'm quite sure the rest of the world will just do without and cut back on their coal use instead of just sourcing it from somewhere else and burning just as much...
The issue that green groups don't like to discuss is that the big buyers of our coal don't necessarily have to source their coal from us...but they prefer to buy from us because we are a stable, peaceful nation where they know they are assured of a steady stable supply of coal...and it's the right sort of coal too for industry and power generation. They could dig up coal in much closer places, but it would be far dirtier and not as easily assured of being a steady supply, so they like to deal with us. Or do we ignore reality, stop exporting the stuff, take the massive economic hit to our economy, and feel smug that while the exact same amount of coal is being burned, at least we aren't part of the filthy business...? |
