just watched wolf creek, the aussie movie loosely based on the falconio story (or not)
is it just me, or did anyone else who saw it find it funny, yet have a disappointing end? i think i was the only person laughing in the cinema when the violent/gory bits were happening i actually thought it was a bit tame, its a shame, cause the papers/reviews said it was super violent and terrifying and scary and etc. |

Desensitised for violence? what do you do when you hear on the news thats a car bomb went off somewhere in the middle east killing 20 or so people, double that amount injuried, I know I have probably got used to it which is sad really, probably cause the media only give it like a 15 second part on the news, here anyway.

im quite the opposite, i feel sick watching those movies, some violence is ok, but i can't watch the ones that go too far like saw for example.

I love watching scary movies, probably seen a majority of horrific movies from 60s 70s 80s till now, but nothing beats the Exorcist Directors cut at 12pm on a thundery night age 18
Haven seen wolf creek as yet but planning to.

I was 18 at the time then i first watched it but now nothing is as scary as that, all horror remakes are a bit lame now.

I saw a midnight screening of it when the director's cut was released. I was actually disappointed.
By the same token though, I watched Saw on a Sunday afternoon with a friend, came home in broad daylight, but HAD to go and check all the doors and rooms in the house. Even though I knew it was a pathetic thing to be doing. The only thing in a movie that truely scared me was the end of "When a Stranger Calls Back". The guy who's already bumped off the children and the baby sitter in the first movie, comes back for her psychiatrist, gets into her house, and paints himself with body paint to "blend" into the wall. She knows he's there, and backs up to the wall in front of him. The last scene is him opening his eyes (which is all you can see) over her shoulder, then it cuts to black.

I don't really find movies scary. Because I know it's not real.
No amount of trying to talk myself into it, or turning out the lights, and being home alone on a stormy night is going to work. The psychological horror is what makes a movie scary. Whats not shown, or what is implied is far more unnerving than any blood and guts slasher flick could ever be.

I think the only real scary movies that are truly scary are the ones based on true stories...
I cant even think of one name now  : maybe thats because I refuse to watch horror ones (including violence etc), we have too much of it in real life...

I just watched the Amityville Horror. I watched that like I was watching the news. Nothing suprised me at all in it. Will there ever be a movie that remotely scares me?

I reckon "The Shining" was pretty scary?... That kid riding his trike up & down the corridoors of the deserted chalet.
I also remember a short one on TV years ago, with I think Karen Black & this little psycho doll that comes alive, with this dirty great knife & is chasing her around the house.

As for being desensitised to voilence, i think its important to distinguish between fact and fiction. News reports and documentaries can really get to me. My skin still crawls whenever i see the footage of the WTC collapsing, car bombings in the middle east or beheadings from foreign countries. But then, sitting home alone the other week in a nice storm watching house of 1000 corpses and devils rejects (both of which are brilliant btw) i couldnt help but chuckle during the gory bits. Dont get me wrong - i dont find scalp carving funny - i find it funny that someone went to the trouble of putting stuff like that in a movie.

"Irreversible". 10 minute anal rape scene. Sickening.
It is one of those movies that you should watch, to know it's something you'll never watch again, if that makes sense. "Shocking Asia" wasn't that viewer-friendly either. *quick edit* --> to keep with the thread topic of "frightening" rather than "sickening", I did find Irreversible to be frightening as well. |
