Default Old School BMX

Hi All.

I saw a post here a while ago about old school BMX.

I have recently finished this bike that I got new, 30 years ago !

Its a 1980 Webco Pro.

Sorry to dig this up but I had a yellow Malvern Star BMW exactly like this, same frame and everything. Awesome build! do you know of anyone that restores BMX's like this and sells them?

Nice build OP, makes me wish I held onto my old Redline MX2 (Black powdercoat), or my little brothers MX3 (Chrome yellow with Chrome ends).

The hard part about some of these is getting rubber, well for us it was anyway. Ive still got my sons old chromed Reline mini with Araya tubular racing rims (20 x 1 1/8). The tyres are impossible to find, and the one Snakebelly I was lucky enough to find being as old as it was had serious cracks in it. Tubular tyres have a tube sewn into the tyre, you cant pull the tubes. The tyres are glued on the rim as there is no bead. So I cant just fit any old tyre and tube setup.

Unfortunately in situations like that you may have no choice but to lace up a new pair of rims to those hubs. Tubulars are becoming less common every year as clinchers have improved and people can not be bothered with the extra work installing or repairing tubulars. The good old tubular is even becoming rare in road racing, although nothing rides like a good quality tubular.

Its probably cheaper just to buy a new set of 1 1/8 rims. The plan was to keep it so my son could teach his kids to ride on it, but by that time they'll probably have hover bikes.

You can repair tubular but it is a dying art. It involves removing the cover over the stitching on the inside of the tyre, removing all the stitching, replacing the tube and doing the reverse to stitch and glue it all up again.

Most states have an old retired boy that does it on the side when he has not gone up north to warm his bones. In road circles we used to save up our punctured tubulars (singles in roadie terms) and then give about 10 at a time to the old boy. $15 repair of each one was cheaper than the $150 for a new single.

Unfortunately, if it is the side wall or tread that is damaged, the tyre is toast.

Perhaps you could search a couple of cycling forums (I would look at road bikes, not BMX), ask the question as they may know of the location of your closest old boy.

As for cheaper to replace the rims, yes it would but nostalgia is worth a lot in my eyes. I am thinking of trying to find a Malvern Start XL600 road bike, the bike that I started racing on. The problem is it is so old now that parts are impossible to find and when you do find them people want a mint for them.

I also finished this one as well. This is my 8yr old sons daily basher as the White webco at the top of the post will be wall mounted !

( and no, its not a mongoose - its a Cook Bro's Racing but you cant find stickers anywhere ! )

Especially the single back brake, no Padding, and the brake cable hanging loose (but still secured).
