The government stance will be not to support a racetrack in Adelaide, their attitude seems to be anyone thats into performance vehicles is a hoon and they will not encourage drag racing in south australia, seems we are just a ****ant town.

Only 33% in favor of a track and that's only 1700 od votes... that's hardly enough votes to get anyone to listen about installing a round about on a busy road let alone get a govt to cough up tens of millions of dollars to "invest" in a drag strip.... The only way a purpose built drag strip will happen is through private investment, which means it will have to return a profit.... you might get govt interest in a circuit if it can be shown there's enough broader interest in other more popular forms of motorsport.

There's a group of investors that have the money in the bank already (28 million from memory) to build a racing complex, they are waiting on government approval for land in the gilman/wingfield area, they have been waiting for a few months now, so all they have to do is release the land and the rest is done. The government don't have to fund the build of the track at all.

I agree that a race track at gilman would be great, and that some the council are also behind it but getting a multi funcyion motor-plex like they are proposing will be hard to get approved with all the multi-million dollar redevellopment in the port adelaide area. There will be plenty of oppisition from yuppie apartment owners that wont want to hear the beautiful sound of thousands of horsepower being unleashed every weekend of the year. they will have to use it constantly to get any return on their investment. The government should get behind a track not just to get hoons off the road but a sound investment for related industries, touism expansion and employment both directly and indirectly. The state government poured millions into the clipsal 500 for years because it greatly increased the state econemy. Saying that i dont think they should just give the drag racing community a track, how much money have they raised in the last eight years. if they think the state gov is going to give em the money they are dreaming.

4Vman has a point (please don't flame me : ) There is no real excuse for street racing.
But any car nut subscribing to this or any other forum who claims has never tried to accelerate faster than someone else is a liar. However, everyone I know that has done any form of organised motor-sport is ruined as a street racer. The buzz from properly organised flat out racing be it drag/circuit/hill climb exceeds that of being 20+kph over the speed limit. Suddenly there XR8/SS or whatever with a cam & zorst is relegated from ultimate car to just warmed over. The big braggers want to run pro comp rather than blow off some POS VN with skinny back tyres dragging it's it bum on the ground like a dog with worms. The more people exposed to proper track days, off street drags etc the better. You will never eliminate street racing but you can reduce it. A proper facility will do that. If only we had one in Melbourne
