Default Moral Dilema Part 1

You're driving a train that's coming up to a Y intersection. On the left of the Y there is a guy working, so the train is diverted down the other one. The guy is working in a tunnel just wide enough for the train. You've just been told that the cameras in the tunnel you're set to go down has three kids playing in it! Even if you hit the brakes you're still going to collide with either the kids or the guy working because the tunnels are pretty close and you're going pretty fast and it's one of those big mo'fo' trains that takes 5 kms to stop. You can hit the "track changer button" so you don't hit the kids, but that'll mean you kill the guy.

This is a hypothetical. Someone has to die, so don't go getting all real world on me (I'm looking at you sourbastard). The question is what should you do? change the track and save the kids OR leave the track and kill the kids????

What's the greater good?

Thoughts anyone?

drive over the kids. Stop the train, come back and murder the rail worker as the only witness. Get back in train and finish your run.

PS. Whats a moral?

To hell with the kids. If they're playing in a tunnel at that age, just imagine what they'll be getting up to when they're 16.

Kill em all and let a norse god sort em out!

I would run to the middle of the train, un hook the remaining carriages, when the front passes the Y I would switch it so the back half takes out the man and then just reconnect further down the track when the front and back half meet up again.

That way no backing up and still get the bonus points!

I was going to say the guy, due to the possibility of life insurance, etc. But then I thought about it.

If someone realises that you switched the train tracks, that makes you an accessory to murder...potentially. We live in an age where the family of the worker may see $$$$ if they realise that you helped kill him and could sue you and the imaginary railway too. They may not win, but they'd probably have a crack at it.

where's the tunnel...?

Depending on the suburb - if it's broady the kids willkill you first.

If it's a Glen Iris/Malvern style suburb, kidnap the kids and get a ransom.........

How about we change it to a runaway trolley car?..
You're standing on a bridge above and decide to jump on the track to block the trolley car. You will die, but five people on the track will be saved. But you are too light to stop it. Next to you is a fat man. He would certainly block the trolley, although he'd undoubtedly die. A small nudge and he'd fall right onto the track below. No one would ever know. Should you push him?

Stay going the same way you are. You can't see the kids so they might get out of the way. they might duck into those big cavities in the side of the tunnel - I did. The guy might be working on the tracks. You go for him and risk derailing the train and killing yourself and any passengers you have.

No such thing as a "track changer" button. Train drivers have no control over moving points (Switches), that is the job of the signalman. Signaller (signalman) cannot move the points with a train signalled towards them until the train has completly passed through them or the signal is at stop and the train proved to have stoped at the signal. Even the largest trains take less than 5k to stop. A 10,000 ton 100 waggon QR coal train stops in about 1800m from 80k on level ground.

What happens is:
The train driver would blast his horn and run the person over then report it to the signalman. He may have applied the brakes.
The police/corroner come and interview the train driver.
The train driver is on stress leave.

A track side worker is or should be protected online by a flag man. The flag man would get the blame if the worker is killed.

A kid playing track side is forced to comply with Darwins law.

No moral issues here.

Hit the kids, the guy has a reason and approval to be in the tunnel, he is just doing his job. The kids are probably little turds anyway. Plus kids may have some space to hide. Hit the brake, hold down the horn/siren, hit the lights and hope they all run like hell! :

Or am I too amoral?

Kids shouldn't be in the tunnel anyway, the parents should have better control of them. If they're there, then it ain't your problem. Case closed.

The three kids were actually vertically challenged terrorists dresed up as kids, they were setting explosives to blow up a train..The man was not working on the track, he was an escaped looney/mass murderer intent on suicide..They all deserved to die...
