Australia's roads arnt up to the quality of the autobahn, nor are the cars that travel at the speeds they do. Australia does need speed limits but it's the way the government is enforcing them thats the problem. |

Have a look at the some of the Italian crashes where they are whipping along in the fog without backing off. I don’t agree with the basic “speed kills” scenario. Training, attitude, road conditions and vehicle preparation play a big part. I’ve seen over 250kmh (indicated) on a race track a few times (one way direction, flaggies, run-off areas) so it’s not all down to speed. Hmm just a thought. Some of those big numbers on the track where when I was young and stupid in uncaged road cars so if anything had’ve happened I would’ve been in the poop. Even with side air bags I think that Holden said anything above 80kmh sideways into a solid object was likely to be a fatality with the VY Commodore. I’ll feel a lot safer at those speeds with a roll cage, proper seat and a good harness.

Autobahn road quality is perfect, yes speed limits are imposed regularly with digital read outs on overhead gantry's - its a brilliant system. Also people watch their mirrors constantly and keep left unless overtaking....everyone does it - its brilliantly effecient.
Most people hover around the 150kph mark (which feels like 100 on the flat wide lane) with some people going faster in the fast lane and a lot going slower in the outer lanes. Interesting to note that Trucks in Europe weight limits are about 1/2 of what can be carried in Aus hence why road quality is maintained. They done have 55 tonne monsters rolling on their roads. |
