My sister and I recently drove over to armidale (about 3.5 hours away). The majority of the trip is just cruising, but about 30-45 minutes of the trip you go over a major hill. The car is a EB 6cyl, the auto has very smooth gear changes, like our BA, when manually changing gears its smooth and when cruising on the highway it kicks down a gear.
But when under load such as going up a hill it slows down and the only point the engine will rev is flat to the floor ( with 7/8 of the pedal distance doing nothing). Why don't these gearboxes like changing under load, a couple of my mates parents cars are like this too? You can feel the engine has power but it doesn't put it too the ground. We had a removal truck infront on the way back and it was only going 10 km/h down the hill. I had to put it back to first and ride the brakes which was weird lol!!

some very useful posts so far. Go Team! Are you sure your accelerator cable isn't faulty ? That would explain the kick down problem.

Check the throttle cable for cracks, this normally happens where it passes over the rocker cover and may prevent you from getting full throttle.
My ED had a lousy kickdown IMO at highway speeds. To help this I used to engage power mode. Give it a try. |

It is recommended to engage Power when; non-stop go-stop driving ie Taxi or Police car, towing or carrying a large load, overtaking and going up steep inclines.

thanks guys, the next time I'm allowed near her car i'll check the cable.
I will kick down most of the time but not always. I think the box may only last a year or so, it has smooth changes though.

Run a KOER/KOEO test and pull the codes for the ECU, chances are your TPS may be out of range etc

Sometimes with electronic transmissions kickdown will happen sooner if you floor the pedal instantly or release then floor. Remember that you are talking to a computer and it is programmed to figure out what you want. A slowly heavier pedal just means you want to go faster (the computer will maintain that gear for economy) but a instant heavier pedal means you want power and give me the max....so she kicks back a gear.
