Default Oxygen Sensor replacement

I read somewhere that the oxygen sensor should be changed at 80,000ks. If its not changed the sensor deteriorates and will gradually cause the engine to use more and more fuel (increasing fuel consumption).

Whats everyones view on this and are there any other sensors that should be changed?

got mine changed at 87,000 on the AU as it was "lazy" when being tuned on the Dyno.It gave delayed responses back to the ECU.

Does anyone have a part number from Ford or an aftermarket source such as Repco or the like? I'd like to know the difference.

Also, from what I understand, it's an easy replace right? It's on the pipe near the exhaust headers, just unplug, screw out and screw in and plug in. Is that correct?

Will the ecu need resetting afterwards? Couldn't hurt I expect!

My wagon has done almost 150,000 kays and so I think it's time I changed it.

Yep, unplug, screw out, screw in, replug.
they should be replaced every 100,000kms give or take.
from what I can tell, the biggest difference across the range of generic is price.

There is a universal one on ebay for $60, haven't priced one from Ford as yet. My wagon is going in for a couple of jobs on Thursday so I think I will see about getting it changed then. Let you know if there is any difference.

Forget Ford, they'll used the generic ones anyway and charge triple the cost. Bosch or NGK from Supercheap or Repco is your best bet - ring around (they range from $90 to $130 for the same thing believe it or not, Ford is over $300 for same item).

JC will know I reckon, if he sees this thread, I think we'd have an answer. If he doesn't he'd just do some of that fast searching of his and find the answer! LOL!

Man, I'd love to see the favourites list on his web browser! LOL!

Let's see if he comes through on a brand and part number. While I'm waiting, I'll check ebay!

Its an easy enough job to do anyhow, may as well do it and let the ecu pick up the faster data from the new sensor!

Many thanks, will ring or drop in to SuperCheap tomorrow. If I get a sub $100 price I'll take it, otherwise I'll ring Bursons, Repco and the like!

Make sure you get the 4 wire one for AU, NGK (link) part number OZA201-DA or a 3 wire one for E-series, NGK part number OZA23-D2. There is no difference between 6cyl and V8 of the same model.

Sorry, typo on my part... yes OZA201-D2 (not DA). Make sure the one they give you has the connector plug attached and doesn't have just bare wires (you can get them bare though the site doesn't list the number).

Try Coventry Auto as well... I think I heard someone recently picked up some sensors from there pretty cheap - Bosch I think, still good.

Get the cheapie from Auto stores for around $80. If it doesn't come with a plug, simply soldier your old/existing plug on - you're gonna throw it away anyhow.

The wires on the replacement plugs are usually different colours to those fitted from factory (even the same brand oddly enough) so you have to be very sure what your are doing. Pating a few extra $ is much better than the hassle in my opinion (then again I can be a lazy-ar5e).

Hi Guys,

Haven't done the sensor replacement yet as I have a few questions.

I was wondering how important the o2 sensor is on gas vehicles?

I was talking to someone earlier this week who said that the sensor helps the fuel injection system, so it is critical. My gas system isn't direct injection, so I was wondering how critical the sensor would be on this type of system?

I don't just want to spend $100 if I don't have to! LOL!

Any ideas guys?

Good point. I don't know either. I would have thought though that the gas system is controlled by the ECU so probably would affect the flow of LPG but I'm really just guessing.. Any one else have any thoughts on this?

Haven't done it yet....apparently a worn sensor causes increased fuel consumption. Spoke to my mechanic today and he believes that they should be ok upto 200k. There doesn't seem to be much evidence either way, but will let you know when I get mine done, hopefully next week.

The gas stepper motor regulator thing either allows more or less gass through the system based on the oxygen sensors output, without it your cars gas system will either run too rich or too lean, unless you have a manual one (which are illegal now anyway)

Thanks for your input. Can anyone else confirm this as well?

I don't doubt you, it's that I'm after some sort of consesus. $100 is over half of a Tickford cluster or momo steering wheel! LOL!

I've been told that oxygen sensor is what controls the stepper motor on gas too. Seing as my economy has gone really bad on gas lately and getting the mixture reset didnt fix it ill have to grab one soon and see what happens, I presume it hasnt been changed in 150k km's

Bought an NTK/NGK one today at Burson's normal price is $116 there but my sister got it for me cheaper... thanks sis :

Car seems to be starting better now as it often stalled when switching to gas at startup. Will know in a week or so if the economy is any better.

I`m not sure on this but i believe the more unburnt fuel contamination the shorter the life ie lots of short trips, longer trips sensor gets hotter burns the crap off and it lasts longer, only a theory on my part, someone smarter than me might confirm this or not
