Default Legal speed illegal?

Is a street acceleration to 60 kays against a friend street racing? Is accelerating to a safe legal speed street racing? Is it illegal? Is it illegal with a friend next to you?

You dont wheelspin, you dont go sideways just off the lights to 60 or 80 or whatever the limit is?

Its not that I do it for a living but what are the rules ?
Personally I have a great respect for life and lives of others and dont believe in stupid criminal and careless driving. On the odd occasion we all accelerate a little quicker to the speed limit but this is not technically a crime. Its not even considered dangerous...so anyone ..what are the legalities here?

yes you can get done for accelerating too quickly. you can get done if there is a car next to you and they accelerate quickly too. that would be looked upon as dragging. you dont need to be speeding to be racing.

I have accelerated next to police cars at a rapid rate yet not breaking the speed limit. Nothing happened? Not a flinch?

Regardless, we wont allow street racing stories, whether they break the speed limit or no on our forum.

Your decision not to run street racing stories is a wise decision.I do not promote street racing as it can accumulate into loss of life and injuries which are left behind for ever.
My purpose here is not to promote it but to distinguish what is right and what is wrong and the fine line which exists.I drive like a 110 year old with bad knees 99% of the time. Sometimes I like to get away from the green a little quicker but never break the speed limit. This is where I am focusing.

After being collected by 2 semi trailers while stopped at lights believe me that wreckless behaviour is wreckless on the street in public and behind closed doors. It is inexcusable and it bloody hurts!!

I noticed you are in Victoria. The police have zero tolerance for speeding too.If you guys do 61 in a 60 zone your booked. In NSW they are a bit more reasonable and allow a tad above for leniency and practicality. If I was that copper i personally would have not stopped you unless you were doing something technically wrong or giving me a moon as you went by.

Yes we do owe each and every other driver a duty of care ( negligence) to not harm others in any way by our actions. If you are out in the country with no one around but wild pigs and you accelerate to the speed limit do you commit an offence? No..you do not.unless the law states that we owe a duty of care to wild pigs.In which case we may be pulled up by the law.
I think when there are more people around as in suburbia this same scenario would pose a greater threat and chance of our duty to drive safely for others.

Undue noise (if it's loud)
Undue noise ( if you screech )
The NSW Anti Hoon laws ( just for you up there )
Dangerous driving ( if the situation has any mitigating circumstances )
If two of you do it there is a rarely used Street Racing law ( in vic )

Thats after 5+ years of not being in the job, ask a traffic officer the same question and I am sure he will come up with even better things.

Going flat out to 60 in a honda scamp isn't much, going flat out to 60 in a Ferrari Enzo is dangerous.

Usless when you get your @ss into gear and go to the strip you won't have to rely on street race stories :P
And afaik you can get done for undue acceleration on the street even with no wheelspin.

It was just on the news about two clowns drag racing in Bayswater just a hour ago and someone pulled out of a side street and one of the cars T-boned him as they were doing about 100 in a 70 zone and killed the person coming out of the side street which is just a waste and thats why you keep this sort of stuff on the track

This is the type of behaviour which is wrong. These guys were going speeds that an unforeseen third party has become victim.100 kays in a 70 zone is disgracefull. They did not consider that their brakes wont stop quick or that there are other people around. That is a blatant breach of duty of care and criminal too/.

We get idiots doing well over 120km/h past our house every single night (speed limit is 70km/h), most of the time racing some other fool. It's only a matter of time before there is another fatal accident within a few minutes walk of our house as a result. I've heard them go from a standing start at the traffic lights just up the road, working their way up through the gears and into 6th gear, still at full throttle, every single night since we moved here.

It gets really frustrating when you're trying to get to sleep and you keep getting woken up by LOUD blow off valves and worked engines of all sorts flying past. I love a good car as much as anyone else here, but on friday nights it's just like trying to go to sleep while lying on the ground 10 meters away from the drag strip at calder park!

And yes, you can be booked for getting up to the speed limit at a speed the police officer thinks is too fast, and I've been told you can also be booked for being too slow too - "obstructing the flow of traffic" or something like that.

I pick my kids up from school and heros go up the street like a drag strip. How anyone can live with running someone over is beyond me?

Rollin ..we can all have fun with our cars but within reason. The safest place is the track or on private property.

Hahaha, yeah, me too mate!

Oh, and as has already been said, the reason they can get people for undue care for getting to the limit quicker then they think is safe, is because you NEVER know what is going to happen on a public road.

A road may appear totally flat from your perspective as a driver, right up until the moment you feel the road surface dip down or even worse, a huge pothole, making the car suddenly unsettled on the suspension - no problem at say 60km/h, but double that and go over the same bit of road and you could end up in a whole world of hurt.

Same with any number of other things, water/oil/coolant or anything else on the road making it slippery, an animal or person stepping out on the road and into your path, drivers not stopping at stop signs or giving way when they're supposed to. And so on.

Basically, because while YOU may know what you're doing and still be in control of your car, there are too many variables involved which make it unsafe to get up to the limit too quickly.

I hope I've made sense.

My word mate.I do heaps of driving and see so much crap on the road that its not funny!!.I was just cruising at 60 last week in the middle lane and some tosser just decided to throw his car from the side straight onto my car.How he missed me ..I dont know.If I was going faster he would have totalled me.

Another bad one is semitrailers. They take up heaps of room and as the go through curves they dont always track in their lanes..so I stay well away
I really believe that 90% of accidents are due to other drivers mistakes. Of those 90% I believe the stress of financial burden imposed by high taxes, overinflated inflation, fuel costs ,govenrment pressures and generally stupid drivers are the major contributors to our dangerous roads.People are not relaxed. Bad roads are another issue.

O.K then fella's.
You accelerate flate out from an intersection, no wheel spin, stock car....is this breaking the law?????
1: In a V8???
2: In a datto 180B????
What do they class as dangerous acceleration??????
My point.....A datto flooring it at an intersection with no wheel spin, will be slower than the V8 at mild acceleration!!!!!
So will I get booked in the Datto then????
