We all at some time make a mistake on the road and need to make amends with the other driver without offending them more but as I have found it is difficult to convey. When someone lets me into their lane as we merge or overtake I just give a friendly thank you wave.We need a wave that won't get mixed up as the 1 finger salute or the two fingers as confirmation. So what constitutes a "SORRY" wave? :

An apologetic expression and two hands palms up in the air I reckon.

two hands...so then you have no hands on the wheel. Thats commitment.
I usually just show the top half of my right hand off the wheel. Funny this should come up now because some pansy in a RAV4 cut me off last night, he waved at me but was smiling at the same time..not on!

I usually stick a right hand up and nod... hang on, that's for courtesy.
Uh, just raise a hand and mouth Sorry I suppose. That's what I do.

I reckon one hand palm up in front of the rear view mirror - and for it to be a sorry wave it should not be quick but should be held up for a good few seconds. For those special occasions when your really sorry make the effort to wind down the window and hold the wave over the side mirror.

I agree it's a tough issue. If you've made a small error and need to apologise - i think anything construed as a "thankyou" wave can really make you look like a dick and do more harm than good. I agree the two hands up in the air is when someone is beeping and you're trying to say "where the f**k do you want me to go einstien?!?!?"

i think sienfeld covers this pretty well - i'll let someone else quote him, i havn't got one of those TV-graphic memories.
If you are guilty, and thus deserve forgiveness, it shouldn't be too hard to pull a guilty face/action. |

Look at your hand - palm towards your face. From left to right, call each of your fingers (and thumb) the following:
Child, child, teacher, child, child. Now, children sit down. (leaving the teacher standing). Otherwise known as the one fingered salute. Appropriate when you are wronged, but when you are in the wrong, turn your palm around and wave - that would be sorry.
