So Toyota is the first company to put it's list prices up since local manufacturing shut down, how many more will do so now that there's no local products acting to draw prices down? Will we see more and more companies raising prices or will competition keep new car prices as low as they've been over the last few years?

Haha, it was a millisecond after I pressed submit that I realised and I can't edit the thread title. Although I do like the stitch up pun so i'll claim it.

The LIST PRICES haven't changed much at all.
For an honest write up on the prices, see this page: https://www.goauto.com.au/new-models...-21/67610.html I would have expected even higher prices for a car sourced from Japan. |

Comments on the release of the new imported Camry have been generally positive from what ive read, v6 for its grunt, the new Camry hybrid priced under $30,000 etc.
Holdens new Commodore will have a big fight to compete with the new Camry, this battle in the market place will be worth watching as it unfolds lol. cheers, Maka

Reckon car prices have been pretty stable for close to a couple of decades now.
I know it is only one example, but wifey purchased a new Lancer GLi in 2000 - cost her just under $21k, and was a really basic thing...CD player was an optional extra, 14" steel wheels with hubcaps, manual windows, 'dumb' aircon (no climate control), did have central locking but you had to use the key to manually lock and lock it (no 'ka-chunka' button on the key to lock/unlock doors, you had to put the key into the lock)...what most cars used to be. About a year ago I remember seeing an ad for the new Lancer, which was $20k on the road with a huge amount of kit. I'm actually surprised we are still paying as little as we do these days - pleasantly surprised. |

They are comparing the new V6 Camry price of from 40Kto the outgoing Aurion which would have been on runout..
PS this new Camry V6 will have 225Kw 360NM so will surely go better than Aurions 200 killerwasps

About 3 years back (end of FG2), Ford were offering suppliers $29,990 drive away on the XR6. I think even the EF/EL XR6 was more than that when new. |

I remember paying near on $40,000 for an EA Fairmont ghia.
List price for an ebgt was about 55 if memory serves. Prices haven't changed much in 30 odd years believe it or not. Under 1% year on year I would guess.

If you put prices into perspective, most prices are much less than 20-30 years ago.30 years ago a new average car would have cost around a years pay, whereas now, with new cars available from 20k,the cost is less than 1/2 years pay. With electricals, most are comparably, about 1/4 the price.

Scary alright seems very odd to have a Camry with that sort of power, not sure it will turn it into good figures though.
I think the new commodore VXR will have 10KW more but it has turbo. don't get me started on Mondeo..

Saw the new Camry on a truck going through Derrimut this morning. They’ve finally made a decent looking Camry.

Funny I actually bought a 'Wheels' magazine from 2002 today. While looking at the new cars price at the back it's amazing how many cars have dropped in price or stayed the same over the past 15 years.
By the way in September 2002 a top spec V6 Camry was $45,835. According to RBA inflation calculator that would be $65,039.78 in 2016. You can get so much more for 65k these days. |
