Default New Ecoboost Mustang runs 12's with a tune

Hey guys just watched a video on YouTube of a new Ecoboost 4 cyclinder Mustang and it run mid 12's with just a tune. Sounds like it might be a cracka of a car if that's the case. Be good to drop a Barra turbo 6 in a new right hand drive mustang.

There's a few guys around doing those now. Pretty funny watching a bigv8 Camaro get dragged by a stock 4cyl mustang with a tune.

It won't matter what you do with a tuned four cylinder Mustang. It will be like having an FPV GS. You will always have to qualify your choice.

Its seriously mind bending, if the EB was ni any other Ford coupe it wouldnt be an issue. I know the old Foxbody SVO did ok for itself but it is weird.

Would be interesting to do a quick spreadsheet and do a comparison of ownership costs of the EB and V8 with say 50/50 city/freeway driving.

If it came down to $50 per week I think I would pay that for the noise.

The Eco boost is cool and that is an impressive time but let's be honest, it isn't a real mustang without the v8.

It's interesting that you consciously (or subconsciously?) think of the EcoBoost as the budget version of the Mustang...a choice that would be made only if you couldn't squeeze out those last few dollars to own 'what you really want'

For me, it's like comparing XR6 Turbo to XR8. Different ways of going fast that make no apologies for what they are.

In fact, the 12 second pass proves the EB4 is very much 'a contender'

and assuming the eco boosted stang is a bit lighter in the front end, it might be an interesting match between the two different powered cars around a track or two.

Yeap and even typing that I know logic says EB Mustang is no issue. And its not really, but there would always be that little demon in the back of my mind saying "you should have..."

Its like the argument against manuals, sure DCT, CVT etc are all arguably faster or more efficient gearboxes. But with a manual you have more of a connection, more soul with the car.

But I do think that the EB Mustang is a price contender...it is $10k cheaper than the V8.

Same goes for the noise and general aura it omits...same theory with V8's and F1 etc etc. its not always about the raw numbers.

I also have a theory that now days you can get BIG power out of many different engines...power is getting to the point were its almost like another 400kw sedan is normal....its the other areas that will set cars apart, the total experience I guess.

You obviously cant deny the EB from a figures POV. Put it in a Capri, style and price it appropriately and you have a winner.

That might sound old school but thats also culture...very hard to change. Im also one of those crazies who thinks putting a V8 in an old Capri is a waste of a Capri...

Yeah I hear ya bud.

I think it's a great situation for Ford, the EB4 means we and many others are debating which Mustang we'd get rather get, rather than which two door sports car we'd rather get.

I hear you too.......thing is only us car enthusiasts will think like this(a shrinking minority...even on this forum)....maybe a few others, but the majority of people now days choose by everything but the engine. Just look at the Aussie car market. It's embarrassing so many people prefer cars with zero zest, appeal, passion whatever.(bit harsh but u get the point)

Another thing is think of what the great German ZF gearbox did single handedly....it made autos preferred in even Ford GTs, simply because it was so good(and makes life easier)

I have an old school V8 Mustang. If I was to get a new one it would be the Ecoboost, as it would be my daily.

And thats the beauty of the EB. For me anything over doing say 300kms per week for work means economy is a consideration.

With the EB you can have the look, styling and enough go with decent economy.

Wonder what the fuel highway fuel consumption differences are? EB must come into its own around town.

The Ecoboost is a seriously impressive car that will likely sell in decent numbers, I still want the V8 but its hard to argue with the EB performance potential at 10k cheaper.

Wonder if or when we might score an EB V6 TT Stang ala the Ford GT and Raptor engine, that would be a very tempting option over the V8.

I think the EcoBoost is intended to help sales in Europe, where displacement is taxed.

It's selling well in the US, also. Many people still remember the '80s Mustang SVO, with its 2.3L intercooled turbo fondly here as well.

I think they made the right call by not offering the 6. Only because by the time you TT one surely its going to be pretty close in terms of consumption compared to the 5.0.

If the 5.0 was a dinosaur then perhaps you can argue against it but its pretty slick.

Awesome! I'm a big fan of turbo 4 cylinder cars. My XR50 is my first 6 cylinder car and whilst it has great lazy power, I still miss the turbo rush and cheaper rego. I would love to get the new Focus RS. Would get that over the Mustang purely on needing 4 doors. But I'll admit that a V8 certainly sounds way better.

For starters GS is is 20k cheaper for people who don't care about extra plastic on the boot, front brakes and a badge.

Secondly the insecurity on this forum is frightening.

I'd love to put the new EcoBoost into an old Cortina, Taurus, or RWD Escort.

So now all I need is an old Cortina, Taunus, or RWD Escort!

(And thanks for the offer, but I'm in America. I hope you get some customers who do that, though.)

Like any turbo engine , you wind up the boost and it flies - it seems the goal is to reach V8 level of performance for less money. Tune ,intake ,exhaust and intercooler will cost 5k or more - engine boosted to 22psi to just get to V8 performance stock .
Things are going to get confusing as it used to be American muscle vs Japanese boosted fours :-)

None of us turbo falcon drivers have had to do a thing to flog big 6.0+ HSVs for years....stock as a rock, factory v8killing machines.

THEN we start talking about modding our turbos for about 2k vs the 10k of the v8s for the same performance(but yes there's plenty of examples....it's just that this time the ecoboost in question isn't built or packaged to tackle the 5.0)
Turbos are taking over the world bro.

Difference is that Falcon turbo is a big cube 4 litre six . 4 cyl 2 litres are taking over the world :-)

Lol @ how Turbo's are taking over the world, thats not the response gentleman Jim and Skaifey got when they stood on the top of the podium at Bathurst having left the V8 world in the dark ages.

I worked with a young lad back in 03 and he thought it was amusing how all of a sudden with the release of the XR6T that turbo tech was the bee's knees in Oz, better late than never i guess.

With a new wave of turbo fours main motivation is fuel economy of a small four when cruising and power of six when pushing - so you get two engines in one and good economy numbers to put in your ads.
Barra turbo is very atypical big engine with turbo added for performance only . You could say Mercedes and BMW are downsizing their big engines and force feeding them in similar philosophy to Ford Australia but they are not exactly mainstream brands. Barra six even in NA form is still formidable engine while turbo 4s without turbo are not.
