As everyone probably would expect, it looks like the car companies are now having to discount new cars to try and sell them due to the FBT changes. |

Another News Ltd beat-up...
"Mercedes-Benz is understood to have a surplus of about 400 of its most affordable sedan, the C-Class, which is Australia's second-biggest selling medium-sized car after the Toyota Camry" That's not even 2 weeks supply.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn especially if you can pretend Mercedes Benz cant sell cars anymore and are going under...spread the fear.

Barina Spark - the novated lease car of choice - is on carsales.com at $11,990 driveaway till 31/7 so the new price of $12,990 represents a price rise as a result of the FBT changes.

Now taking the example for this car, if they were selling 150 a week, and sales have basically stopped, then they also probably have a months supply on the water coming here, they probably have a few months production about to come on line, that they cant automatically cancel. 2 to 3 weeks of surplus now, means 7 or 8 weeks surplus in a few months, if the car sales dont match what has been ordered. |

Benevolent of the Lion to offer 1K off....not something I'd see making your average punter rush in, interesting that the press give them airtime for 1K a vehicle

The only comparison I have seen lately is the Australian Dollar dropping against the US dollar. It may make Jeeps and Chryslers a bit more expensive, but the US dollar dropping doesnt affect anything coming out Japan, Thailand or South Korea. The Aussie dollar is actually stronger than the Japanese Yen from a year ago.

I recently heard the craziest sales offer from a Perth Nissan dealer... Buy a new Patrol 4X4 and get a free Nissan Micra!

If you take a step back and look at the big picture this is not going to be very good for Falcon or Commodore enthusiasts.
Yes lower prices will help a few who buy new privately but the drop in novated lease cars will have the following effects: 1) There will be far fewer low km recent model XR6T/FPV/SS/HSV available on the second hand market. 2) The price of the above second hand cars will go up due to demand from those who previously bought new as well as the actual short supply. 3) There will be many more second hand "Great Walls" instead of Falcadores as those who could previously afford a Falcadore will have to settle for something cheaper. 4) Those with high spec Falcadores will hang onto them longer and only replacing them when they are stuffed. So all those who are selfishly rejoicing at this "crack down on tax rorts" will, I suspect, be complaining in 5 years that they can't afford a second hand FG2/FH XR6T etc. because they are too expensive and most have 200,000++km on them. |

A C Class Mercedes-benz is not a medium sized car, lets clear that myth up for a start, its a small car. The Euro manfacturers have been rorting down-under customers for years and if they come under pressure from theses changes then I don't have a single ounce of sympathy for them. FWIW log books have to kept for 3 months every 3 years in New Zealand to justify business / personal use percentage split. ATO is bringing the Aussie system into the 21st Century, no big deal IMO.
These things have a way of working themselves out, lower prices equals more private sales. |
