Default Highway patrol vehicles post RWD

Just wondering other members thoughts on which way highway patrol vehicles might go after the current generation of high powered rear wheel drive vehicles finish.

I would assume most of the current crop are SS or XR6 Turbo. Will we see a move to 5 series type vehicle or maybe Focus ST, Golf, WRX. This may be hindered by manual only gearboxes.

Its likely Ford and Holden will have some imported pseudo-performance V6 AWD sedan type model that would fit the bill well enough.

Other than that they might be stuck in Camrys! Would be bit a bonus for the crims hey

In the UK they use the likes of WRX, EVO and other turbo rockets. I was doing 90mph on the M1 when an EVO flew passed me like I was walking.

Agree. If they cannot drive a manual though they need to learn to drive.

I'd say Ford would have the Ford Fusion ready for the Australian market by then. Twin turbo V6

The Commodore is still around. I'd say the Commodore, if it goes perhaps the Caprice ala the USA Police Spec. If not perhaps 300C. This is going off the assumption it needs to be large, fast, 4DR RWD/AWD. What are we going to get to replace the Falcon and Commodore? The Fusion comes in V6T AWD iirc.

What about the Ecoboost Mondeo? Its still big enough, and now there is no Falcon they can use the proper engine not the detuned one.

There is a blue VE ute with a FOX sticker on the rear windscreen which is an unmarked car getting around in Sunbury and surrounds, shifty.

They have tried WRX's in Vic before and they were withdrawn because the officers driving them complained about them being cramped. And who could blame them? If you were spending several hours on the road every day the last thing you would want to be driving is some cramped little buzz box.

Erm pretty sure it's not the fact that officers can or cannot drive a manual...it'll be fleet requirements that all cars must be auto. This will be for a range of reasons from safety (2 hands on the wheel) to needing to use left hand for sirens/lights/radio etc.

Yeah its funny, a normal car is probably fine for the most part in Australia as traffic is very slow. In France traffic can sit on 160-170 in the 130 zones so we are talking much higher speeds over there. With the release of the Megane RS the French cops got it up to an indicated 250kmh on the highway as a demo of its performance for the cameras - not a closed highway, a normal highway with traffic. Imagine if the cops pulled that kind of stunt over here lol, they would be thrown in jail.

Most likely a Toyota Aurion or Ralliart Lancer, they've had the Aurions in QLD since they came out and the lancers have been unmarked cars for a while also.. Both would leave most street cars for dead, quite roomy and responsive swift handling..

There will never be another BFYB highway patrol car to match the XR6T.
I work on a main road that leads to an accident blackspot a few kms out of town and the XR6T highway patrol car is always a good 100m ahead of the SS highway patrol car.

There is no V6 engine in the new Fusion, they are 4 cylinder only.

Lincoln MKZ has a 3.7 V6 and AWD...

So Fusion has been developed with more engine options in the future one being an Ecoboost 2.7 V6.

Mondeo as a pursuit car? That's pretty funny. May as well just use a Camry.

They should support the local manufacturing industry so post 10/2016 anything with a Ford badge will be out. Look at Aurion or whatever replaces the Commodore.

I wonder how they manage in Europe then where the speeds are much higher than here and they have to drive manual cars?

As already said, auto only is a requirement for OHS / WHS or whatever term it's being called this week.

They probably have less restrictive rules in Europe.

There is no reason why the cops here can't do the same, it's just that they are not allowd to.

Not forgetting that up untill recently regular auto cars were somewhat of a rarity in much of Europe. When my uncle came here last year from Italy he made the comment that there were more auto cars in our imediate family here than his entire unit block back home!

So, there may be a cost factor / delay for delivery of auto cars.

Hmmm lets see...

Australia has basically the lowest speed limits in the world.
Commodores and Falcons are almost non existent outside Australia.

Almost every part of the rest of the world has some form of Highway Patrol.

Maybe they will use the same cars that are used to patrol roads in other countries that have speed limits above 110km/h and do not have speed cameras every 100 metres..........

The whole premise behind the question is flawed, that only RWD falcons are capable of performing policing duties?

There are numerous cars with as large enough interiors for piling captured crims into the back of and allowing a fully laden police officer to work comfortably.
There are plenty of other drive configurations that are proven to be capable of high enough speeds to do the job. A Falcon isnt going to keep up with a lambo or even a fiesta dangerously at top speed as the chase will be called off, same with a FWD or AWD. they will all be quick and safe enough to catch up with a speeding motorist not intent on getting away from the fuzz.
Im sure the police force like everyone else will adapt

I don't think Australia will see the end of hi-po RWD (AWD?) Ford police cars in 2016, they just won't be made here.
After all you always release the bad news first ;)

Some possibilities;

Two door cars are useless as HWP vehicles. If a vehicles is intercepted and the driver needs to be transported they cannot control the detainee safely and a second vehicle must be called out.

This was made very obvious when QPOL were given some monaros.
