Over Twitter the European Space Agency said there was no link: https://twitter.com/esa "RT @esaoperations: ESA experts confirm *no* link between #meteor incidents in #Russia & #Asteroid #2012DA14 Earth flyby of tonight #SSA #NEO" There's an interesting calculator which models the effects of an asteroid or comet impacting Earth. You can plug in different parameters to see what the effects would be on you at different distances from the impact site: http://impact.ese.ic.ac.uk/ImpactEffects/

Movies always seem to have an escape. A Bruce Willis type scenario. I remember a scene from the movie 'Deep Impact', where fragments of the 'Impactor' are witnessed by many, entering the atmosphere. The reality would be, anyone within 50 or more kilometers of such an event, would be instantly incinerated (iow Baconised) - then blasted to pulp by the pressure wave.
See this Wikipedia article about the Tunguska event... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=rflTN4XAt34 There is presently, no escape. My guess is that this object may have been about the size of car. Possibly an Iron and Nickel bolide that broke up high in the atmosphere, about 20 or more kms in altitude. The explosion sounds are mostly sonic booms, but it does seem that some of the noise is from the destruction of the bolide. When you are travelling at 11+km per second, hitting the thin air above 50 kilometers altitude is like smashing into concrete. I know a little about astronomy, it's my hobby. Nice link chambo. Crazy stuff, they're saying up to 1000 people were injured, so far no fatalities though. Now we've got an even bigger one passing by today I think.
Would have been badass if the rumour about the Russian airforce shooting it out of the sky was true... |

Amazing. The sonic booms were pretty awesome. I must admit if I was in my car watching that ball come towards or over me I would be crapping myself and telling my mrs I love her lol. I have seen enough movies to have known what that was lol.

that pic with the meteor whizzing across the sky , it`s an eye opener, see how much ground it covered, that thing was hauling,
the scary thing to me is no one saw it coming , probably most of the astronomers where looking at the other one that missed us. edit: now i think about it, i remember seeing a small meteor come down one night some years ago, i was heading east about 5/10 k`d out of horsham (vic), it was north north east of me i thought it would just phssst in the air, but it had a fire trail all the way to the ground, i had no way of judging size, it could have been 2km`s away or 20 from where i was, i suspect it would have been the size of a footy or less when it hit the ground. Actually a lot of scientists, Bill Nye in particular believe that given enough time we can divert any and all meteors Hollywood movie style, just his one and the one that apparently exploded over Cuba were missed.

i saw one about 10 yrs ago as i was crossing the Storey Bridge in Brissy, fell slowly straight down towards the direction of the airport, leaving a big blue/yellow flame behind it and suddenly just went pop and blinked out of existance. What i saw couldve easily been 500kms away over the ocean, but at night it looked like landing on my bonnet :P

there is an asteroid called 2012 DA14 1200sq km passing between the Earth & Moon tonight, at its closest point, it will be approx 17,200km from the Earths surface and will miss us by 15mins
Meaning, if the Earth was 15mins slower in its rotation, tonight would be messy as its supposed to be passing on our side...if you were standing on it, you would be able to see Australia 50m long 200,000 tonne http://www.news.com.au/technology/sc...-1226577882092

It just breaks up in the air. Once it hits the atmosphere the friction just heats and destroys it.
If there was anything on it it'd have to be mined in space. But given it was smaller than a bus that hardly seems worth it.

A few more meters in diameter and we wouldn't be talking about shattered glass. If the angle of entry was steeper, one of the effected cities might have become holes.

The scarcity of evidence on the ground has fuelled scores of conspiracy theories over what caused the fireball.
The area plays host to many defence industry plants, and Nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky says it could have been "war-mongers" in the United States. "It's not meteors falling. It's a new weapon being tested by the Americans," he told reporters in Moscow. Asked about the speculation, an official at the local branch of Russia's Emergencies Ministry simply replied: "Rubbish". http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-02-1...-blast/4523446

Too many people think all meteors must leave craters...they don't. Most blow up in an air burst, such as this one in Russia did. It was plainly a meteorite and nothing else, and did what you would expect such a small one to do. The "falling stars" we see so spectacularly fall at night sometimes are usually only the size of a grain of sand or rice, not the car sized things we imagine...
