Default Renew head lining ... $?

What is a reasonable price to have the head lining redone?

From people I've spoken to, it's anywhere between $120-$200.

G'day Pete, if you can remove it & prep it it'll be alot cheaper to get done - just make sure whoever does the job gets the same factory fabric if you want the same stock look again. i was quoted $220 for the full job, i removed & prepped the lining & it cost me $120. Obviously ring around your local area for a good price.

cheers, Maka

Thanks Kr1sto and Maka.
Maka, I had thought of doing the prep but concerned about how to transport to trimmer's shop. Spose I will have to put it back in place for the trip.

Good point Pete, best to use a ute/wagon to transport the lining to the motor trimmers if you prep it - you might be lucky & find a mobile trimmer that will come to your residence to do the job. The biggest hassle i found was getting the lining in & out of the car, definately a two man job if you dont want to bend / crease anything. Good luck with it mate!

cheers, Maka

If they know what they are doing it will only take them an hour or maybe an hour and a half to do the job. Just time to go for a wander and grab a cup of coffee.

You'll have to weigh up whether the $50 or so you save is worth the hassle of removing it, transporting it to and from etc.

Up here in Darwin where things are usually far more expensive than down south it cost $140, was finished in less than 70 minutes and looks proper schmick.

The guy that did mine said sometimes he has exchange linings as particular models start coming in around the same time - something to consider. You could be in and out in 30 minutes.

Cheers Vincenzo

Not to mention the clean up because the old foam makes a hell of a mess of a cloth interior

You are supposed to remove the lining from the interior before starting to prep it The $100 i saved was well worth it considering it took less than an hour to prep the lining ect, plus i learnt something new about fettling my AU. Each to there own i suppose!

cheers, Maka

I decided to attempt the repair myself, in situ, as nothing to lose. Besides, the car is an old girl and I am not a perfectionist in this situation. It will take a few sessions of doing the following but so far it is working.

I cut some tiny 2mm long slots with a craft razor blade in the lining at different places. Into those slots I inserted a tube extension from the spray nozzle of an aerosol glue can and sprayed the glue around. Then I smoothed it out carefully, not pushing sideways much at all but rather pressing the lining back up against the foam. I held the lining against the backing board with a thin-ish pillow under which I placed egg cartons and held them in place with thin bamboo sticks (from the garden). the sticks were flexible and were pressed against the floor, making sure to provide some vertical pressure to the cartons. Everything was left in place over night and most of the repaired area had held up when examined in the morning.

I'll have to do that two or three more times and it should be fixed good enough.

Agreed, BHDogs, but what type? And it has to be packaged as an aerosol complete with a tube delivery. Open to suggestions.

You are more than likely trying to glue the lining to the crumbling old foam. Ain't gonna work.

Try a few thumb tacks.
