HR disc brake front end for a start.
Lower it about an inch to inch and a half...nothing silly or the bump steer will be atrocious let me tell you...

Wheels? Can't beat traditional...there are plenty of mag wheel places stocking retro or old wheels like Tasman mags that have been refurbished. You can't beat a set of fat 13 or 14" plain alloy "jelly bean" mags though.

Then again, fat steel wheels with chrome trim rings and a small inner hubcap look the business on any of those cars.

Great choice of car.

By the way...has it still got the grey motor in it or a red? Go a red for sure...twin Strombergs (the manifolds are still easily available), extractors, bit of head work, and some chrome, backed with a Celica five speed and you'll have a great every day car that will run forever.

Personaly I would stay steel

heres an EJ I did for a guy a few years ago with HIS choise of wheels, I really dont think it suited the car

This just looks odd and out of place IMHO

Telfs Sedan looks like the compleat package

I'd just loose the hub caps pain the wheels run chrome nuts and bullet centers with dress rims & white walls and drop it on its guts

Great choise of Car BTW, they seem to get put in the ugly corner in favor of the EH, but I think they have bucket loads more charictor,

HR front end is a good upgrade, but finding one is getting a little harder at a budget price, theres nothing wrong with king pins and drums if they are well maintained

you know we need pics of your car now dont you

Nostalgia for me! Wide 13's, raised white lettering, super-hot,over-cammed grey motor, extractors or cast iron headers with triple SU's or triple Strombergs! Oh and don't forget the Speco 3 speed floor shifter!

I know this is a falcon, but I'm seeing an EJ in this type of colour scheme

Blow in the primered / puttyed sections, paint the scollups in (metal flake the roof red) red the wheel's porta walls

mate, people will try any thing and offer crazy money for it as well

I'm not sure where rego sits now for the 173 but I assume its under 30% bigger than the original largest grey so no big deal, I'd make sure the rust is good its not leaking oil that it has 4 good tyres and all the lights work and it stops straight and trew and take it for a Blue slip, I wouldnt mention the engine change and see what happens

Now that just looks cool as a cucumber.

Leave the chrome work on it...please please please don't make the mistake a lot of guys did back in the eighties by thinking it made them look "modern and smooth" and dechrome them. It just made them look odd. In fact track down some old Nasco accesories and put more chrome on it...

The beauty of those old cars is that you have to do very very little to the outside of the car, if anything, apart from a nice paintjob. Wheels are probably the most important decision you can make in their appearance. Look at the photos up the top there of ones with modern mag wheels...they just plain look wrong. Same as all those old Yank muscle cars that are being fitted with 20 inch wheels...it just looks stupid and makes them into a cartoon image of what the car is.

Go no bigger than 14" or just possibly 15" in the right style and you'll love walking out and looking at it in the morning, and so will everyone who sees it.

The 173 is a great starting point...if nothing has been done to it, simple and relatively cheap mods include a Cain manifold with a 350 Holley (make sure it's jetted correctly...it's only a small capacity engine and it doesn't need huge jets), mild cam (what we used to call a 30/70 I suppose) with an alloy timing gear (of course), get the head shaved 30 thou, valves seated for unleaded, high volume fuel pump and oil pump, and decent lifters. Get the flywheel lightened a bit, fit extractors and a single 2" system, fit some chrome, and you'll have a reliable runner that looks right when you pop the bonnet.

No it's not but it's better than nothing down the side,

If you can't find an original set (swap meets are your friend) you can get plane stick on chrome about 1/2'" wide (no black rubber down the center)
