Default Only 6 weeks from date of crime to sentencing.

Those 2 guys in Phuket that killed that poor lady for her hand bag were picked up within days, paraded before the media, did a reanctment of the crime for everyone to see, went to Court, pleaded guilty and have now been sentenced, to life life no less, all in 6weeks.

God, here in Oz our lawyers would still be getting phsych reports, presentence reports, pleading not guilty, going to lengthy trials, making applications for bail, challenging the prosecution at every twist and turn and accuse the Police of obtaining evidence and confessions unlawfully, regardless of what the CCTV shows.
They would try and get the CCTV thrown out because it's prejudicial to their clients.

Just shows how rediculous our so called legal system is and how slow the wheels of justice turn, no wonder the Courts are banked up. If they got convicted here, they'd be out in 10 years for manslaughter.

Now where's that rant switch.

Sadly however their punishment is manifestly too soft , just put the vermin against a wall and be done with them .

Yes well, it's what's called "taking crime seriously"...and the philosophy that if you remove the scumbags from society for a good long goddamn time, they won't be able to do any more crime for a good long goddamn time either...

Justice needs to be swift and fall like a hammer blow on wrong-doers...there is no excuse for preliminary hearings, letting the person out on bail for some far-away trial date, then also have delays again by the defence lawyers, then drag it out some more calling for expert witnesses...it should be a case of "look this is pretty clear cut...we have firm evidence that your client was the person there, let's have the court case right now without delay".
Only complicated cases with masses of detailed evidence should take a long time.

We are told there's no such thing as "deterrent value" in harsh punishment or mandatory sentencing for criminal acts. Of course, these same experts also tell us that there is "deterrent value" in having speed cameras and radar traps...

The legal system here is a joke and should really be given a major overhaul, it's long overdue But sadly that's unlikely to happen anytime soon :( At least poor old Mr Carbon Tax can't get the blame for this one

Playing the Devil's advocate, part of the reason things have happened so quickly is because of the money brought in by the travel industry. If it was to become known that it is a dangerous place to holiday then imagine where the local economy would go.

On a personal note I am glad all sides have closure so quickly.
