Ive been watching from about 5 minutes before landing. I started getting excited too haha, and they just erupted must be a huge release of stress for them that there work has paid off.

I loved that bit when they got the first photo, the guys like 'we have thumbnails!' and everyone starts hugging and cheering

An amazing accomplishment. Us simple folk are often mesmerised by some gimp controlling a plastic heli toy with an iPad, this is on another level. JPL has parked a car on Mars. The mathematics involved in being able to shoot a payload and land it within 500 meters of the target years later is mind bending.

Awesome day!!! Watched it live and was holding my breath with all the people in that room at JPL.

Of course it didn't take long for the internet news sites readers comments sections to start going "Two billion dollars waste of money starving children herpa derp"...
They forget: it cost about $7 for each member of the United States population, and it's way less money that Australia piddles away each year on foreign aid to the local region alone for which we get no thanks and no benefit. I know where I'd rather see the money spent.

Another comment on a site commented that while they didn't want to take anything away from the Olympic athletes, but "we should celebrate people who are mental athletes as well. It said "So let us cheer for a robot today. Let us celebrate its excellence, its possibility of failure, and the incredible task it will undertake for seven minutes."
