Default Cambell Newmans job cuts

How do all the fellow Qlders think our state is going now that alot of people are getting the sack? I understand that he told us he will get rid of the states debt but not at the cost of Queenslanders jobs.

Needed to be done IMO.

He inherited a virtually bankrupt state. Good on em I say.

Some will suffer but ultimately it needed to be done.

He's doing the right thing. He's looking at government paid jobs, to see if they are needed. If they're not needed, then they get the axe! It's like streamlining - cut off the bits that hold you back.

Big government, not good. For NSW, reckon too much Local GovCo weight, but this is another story. State staff ditto. We'd end up like Greece.

Happens all the time in public service. Every man and his dog is a manager, need a manager to manage that manager and so on.

Taxpayers interest is in having the most streamlined public service possible.

Cut the management and keep the front line staff!

How did you think he was going to get rid of debt?

It's always going to be through spending cuts and job lay-offs, asset sell-offs, increased taxes, attempts to encourage investment through policy or a combination of those things.

Oh a political thread.... goody...

Funny no one mentions the nurse and doctors issues.
All casual and contract nurses have been sacked.
Doctors and nurses are already over worked and understaffed.
The pay system still doesnt work.
They are requesting money back from staff for overpayments when they cant prove the over payment occured. (friend of mine is a nurse and had 2 lots of money removed from her account before it was announced from the government that the are going to try and recover the debt. No one from payroll called her and no letters were sent).
Previous government said they cant garantee that group certificates would be accurate (a federal offence).

Ambos and firies are having their conditions slashed... and a paltry pay rise to compensate loss of conditions.

The books still havent been opened and the real debt hasnt been announced (and probably never will)

Pollies have had NONE of their pay reduced or conditions removed.

Vital services in northern qld are set to shut (biosercurity is one) and everything is being again centralised in Brisbane. (no one exsists outside Brisbane).
A non for profit injured veterans association in Townsville were told to leave their state owned office building...as are other community groups.
Bus services are already being cut here.
Pollies have had NONE of their pay reduced or conditions removed.
New multimillion dollar parliamentry office complex to be built in Brisbane...

The head of the Gladstone Port Authority ( a labour party member) was sacked and replaced with a friend of Campbell Newman.

One female minister had her daughter overdosed with drugs in another ministers office (where she worked). Another female ministers son got a job with main roads (while everyone else is being sacked).

While under the previous government there was no leadership and money was being Wasted, this new lot is NO BETTER. If you honestly beleive the state is going to move forward by sacking 20000 people and putting them on the dole, cutting vital serviceds which are needed to run the state, then you have rocks in your head.

This lot have shown the same utter contempt for the people of this state as do the other lot..... infact i think its worse. Centralisation and blowing even more money in Brisbane will kill the rest of the state (which creates ALL the revenue).

CSG and mining are destroying farmlands and so is flyin and flyout mines, which this new government continues to allow. Farmers have no right of refusal to stop mining or CSG on their properties... this government wont change it.

People forget that not everyone employed in the government is a office worker paper pusher.

Its alarming how mwany people dont give a crap and are totally ignorant at what the public services provide. I work in science in the public service. I am a chemist and provide very vital service to my employer and the public, all for a meagre salary.

The problem is that Labor ignored the issue for many years, kept employing hundreds if not thousands of extra people (a lot of them contractors who really shouldn't whinge as a contractors job can end any old time), and now someone has to deal with it.
Newman and his government are the unfortunate ones who have to make the hard choices.

It;s exactly the same as the USA when Obama got elected and had to make difficult decisions...who then got blamed for years-old problems that were nothing to do with him, but which he had to now fix.

It's a case of being handed a t u rd and being told "here, it's your job to polish this"...

Look, it had to be done regardless. Like has been mentioned, most places work as such:

Manager --> Manager --> Manager --> Person who actually does the work.

Cut out the management and things not only get done but also cuts unnecessary funds being paid to someone who just sits there.

However I think Campbell has underestimated other problems funding certain initiatives (ie: public transport "free" trips, which is expected to be triple the allocated budget)

Good example...Just since privatisation in my own line of work we've seen it expand to something like Manager-manager-(maybe throw in a few consultants)-manager-superintendent-supervisor-person who does the actual work.

Most of them are on contracts of some sort of other, some are "make work" positions that have been created for no apparent reason other than to use some business model that an expert somewhere has thought is a good idea...
