BRISBANE city council has been left red-faced and ratepayers will have to foot the bill to have their street resurfaced again after a bizarre shortcut by road workers last week.

Vera St, Greenslopes residents, who say they were given only 12 hours' notice about the street work last Thursday, are baffled as to why workers chose to bitumen around a parked Holden Commodore sedan.

Tracy Amaya said the car should have been towed.

"I received notice on Wednesday when I got home and checked my letterbox, so by the time people got home (the message) could have missed people," she said.

"Surely the vehicle could have been towed. It's going to be expensive to come back, if they come back, with all the machinery, just for a square."

Holland Park Councillor Ian McKenzie said ratepayers would have to pay for it.

"The (workers) even called the cops out to try and move the car. They also tried to get it towed, but were unsuccessful," he said.

"Some people just don't take any notice.

"Unfortunately, the ratepayers will pay the cost.

"I've been on the phone with the (road workers) and they will come around and fix it as soon as they can."

The unsealed space now has "no parking" etched roughly in line paint.

Easily solved make the owner of the car pay for it

But may be the council should have just towed the car around the corner or to a holding yard.

I do asphalt for Boral in Melb, this happens all the time.
We are not allowed to move cars, only if they are in a no standing or clear way.
Most residents get a week notice via a letter box drop, some must forget.

It would have cost peanuts to get that car off the road and around the corner, or even on the grass next to the road.... what.. $70-100? If that.

What will it cost to get that correctly patched? Will heavy machinery be needed? $ Thousands?????

Tell you what... If I was a local resident I would be asking the council to justify why rate payers should foot the bill for other peoples stupidity...

No actually make the idiots who did the job when it was obvious that it could not be completed pay for it.

The biggest problem with Australia at the moment is the immunity that public vegetables have from their own stupidity and contempt for the rate/tax payers that are their actual employers.

If the crew that did that job had worked for me I would have sacked them on the spot.

The problem is that if the car was legally parked they have no right to touch it.

How would you feel if you had legally parked your car outside your house and gone away for 3 days only to come home and find you car had been moved to another place? How about if it were damaged?

Yes, and I agree. A bit of lateral thinking and massaging of the ego would have very quickly resolved that problem.

"We moved your car as I have the same model and know how good they are. We didn't want you to return to find damage so we placed it in a safe place... I'm sure you can see the benefit of doing that mr Commy driver"..

But none the less, you are right...

That job screams of 'easy overtime'... start a 1 day job that needs an extra 20 min work the following day for whatever reason and then do the job while charging the 3-4hrs minimum.

Agreed.
Although its funny and moreso because its an SS (If it were my car id be very annoyed). I still put full blame on the people doing the work.
Hope the people doing the work are dealt with appropriately.

That happened on our street.
Letter dropped and said it was going to happen on day 'X', but did it on day 'Y' so it was no fault of the parked car. They still havnt come back and fixed it months later.

Anyone remember the one where they were widening a road, but the electric company had yet to move all the powerpoles. So what did they do? They still widened the road which left the poles suddenly in the middle of a lane

I don't think so. There was a yellow "no parking" line on the corner but it stopped at the power pole. If you googlemap it you will see another car parked in almist the same position.

I agree completley. Roadwork companys in Brisbane have been taking the mickey for too long. They should be held accountable.

Councils (and their contractors!) have a bad habbit of:

Not telling you road works are going to be in progress in your street
Telling you at the last minute that road works will be carried out in your street
Not showing up at the time when they tell you they will be working on your street
Taking 4 weeks longer then the planned road works and leaving the road base to crumble and fall apart after 4 weeks of heavy traffic over it.

They did the same thing on Botany Road in Mascot. A couple of years later it's still not fixed.

Not hard to fix that. 2 square meters of asphalt, and they don't need a dumptruck or a paver that can be done by hand with a waker packer easy.

No it wouldn't, if you look under the car that is a 7mm prime coat, that is when bitumen (tar) was used. Dense grade asphalt doesn't leave air born particles mate. I was a leading hand on a road works crew for 3 years .

I've yet to see a good job of road done around here, from Nimbin to Byron and in between the roads are horrible, infact goat tracks would be better.

I can think of numerous occasions where, if you only gave me twelve hours notice, my car would probably still be sitting there.

12 hours seems awfully quick...the last time (in Bundy) we got a notice that the council was doing something by the roadside, it was a weeks notice.

Readers reported asphalt-layers have left other blank spots at the nearby Navy Street, Holland Park West, and several others in recent weeks in suburbs such as Newmarket and Alderley.

Council workers kerb their ambition

``Wouldn't a tow be a more appropriate use of ratepayers money?'' wondered one reader, who sent in the new picture.

Another wrote in: ``Exactly the same thing has happened in Billington Street! How many more places have they done this? If there is a car they can't move, then they should not start the works.''

Others said they had seen it happen many times in the past.

Brisbane City Council has been approached for comment.

Same thing happened in Kurilpa st West End less then a month ago.... Was even a car with Company plates, parked outside of that particular company.....
