A old workmate of mine has his own shop now, One of his staffs phones was stolen(admittedly left in a stupid spot) and his CCTV caught the thief in the act. Obviously the police can only do so much for minor offenses such as this. So now the video is on Youtube.

I'll understand if mods want to remove the above link.

But when the police cant do much, is it OK that we Name & Shame these people.

Do a Google search. There is an Aussie site where one posts clips of crimes and members of the public can dob in the crim if they are recognised. Was on the radio a few weeks ago, several arrests have been made already so it does work.

Funny how the phone she stole was sitting right in front of the CCTV monitoring screen & at least she had the courtesy to stand & pause in front of the camera for some good footage.

Whenever I see something laying around that could be knocked off, I often think ACA or TT are executing a sting or (more recently) that NAB are shooting a commercial.

I dunno where you could get that idea from?

Showing a video of a crime in progress has no repocussions and there no grounds to sue.... and you cant sue someone for defamation as the video is PROOF that the act occured.

At my old work a shopping center i know they wernt allowed to post pictures of known shop lifters or other criminals on there public notice board due to some privacy issues.

My local shopping center actually has a "Police Noticeboard" at the bottom of the travellators into the carpark with photos of persons of interest. I guess if the police are endorsing it in that regard, why not plaster their photo's around.

I think the police think they have better things to do. They were no help when it came to finding out little Morris Mini that got stolen, I found it with help from a couple of random guys and Facebook... Ohh and where did we find it... IN A POLICE IMPOUND YARD!!!

If the pictures were taken buy the stores own sercurity cameras and it relates to a crime committed in the store then there is nothing stopping them from posting the pictures up.

If they have been caught and convicted of a crime and have no outstanding issues then yes it may cause an issue then.

*edit* having said the statement above, you cant be sued for telling the truth.... if you a picture of someone and you have written "convicted criminal" or "wanted for theft" then you cannt be sued for it if the video footage shows the crime happen.

We have the problem: If indeed we catch a thief - a known thief - a frequent thief. What are we going to do?

I'm a realist, the Police have bigger things to worry about. I know this. And the offender knows this. It's like the thieves live by the quote from Heat " "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." We catch them, they put whatever it is down and walk out. That's the end of the story. Nothing to deter any future attempts and they'll be back tomorrow for another round.

you are asking in the wrong place there are many armchair laywers who know it all because the watch boston legal ( or what ever show) . apart from our legal system being different to the USA it is fiction.
as I understand it you can be prosecuted for showing the video as they are not proven to be guilty. why don't the police act on it?
please don't take my word for it I just have doubts and limited legal knowledge. ask a solicitor or chamber magistrate where you stand . the AFF arm chair lawyers will lead you off into their fantasy world and maybe trouble

A small business here had some clothing items stolen from her shop and it was caught on video. So what the owner did, was she took screenshots and posted them on her business Facespace page (where she has like 2.5k friends) and had people try identify the culprits. They were eventually caught because somebody knows somebody, who knows more people, who knows everyone on Facebook.

in order to be prosecuted you need to commit a crime. and what crime is it by showing a picture of someone committing a crime?

check the legislation regarding surveylance cameras and you may be enlightened the fottage can only be used in very specific ways . failure to adhere to the correct procedure can make you liable to criminal prosecution . if the person has someone in the area who looks similar and the vigilante video results in that person being persecuter or has their reputation damaged they can be sued . the list goes on , any one who does this without legal advice is looking for trouble

You can only be sued by someone for defamation if the defamation is FALSE.
Video evidience is not defamation or inflamatory.
It proves it happened.

I run 24*7*365 day a year vid, I am not allowed to even view the footage let alone display it, or d/load it without a Qld Police report number.. It then goes to a third party to be downloaded and forwarded back to Qld Police... I never 'legally' get to view the images.

Be aware, Privacy Laws and the Invasion of Privacy Act is more paramount in Qld than playing Cleudo where Mrs Green was caught by your camera in the library with the candlestick....

There is legislation about video taping employees in their work areas, but not the general public.

My suggestion is to post the address of the shop so as to narrow the audience....youtube is a BIG place.

for example if it was geelong someone would reply pretty damn quickly me thinks.

Also....post a REWARD.....that will get some action!

you really have no idea I manage a bus depot the buses have cameras and the laws regarding video footage are quite intimidating. No one has a right to publicly display an image caught on surveylance video this is black and white and the panalties are harsh.
