Boy I can't wait (note sarcasam).
Trucks only..... for now; I thought this was already part of the Heavy Vehicle Safety-Cams Point-to-point speeds cameras to target trucks, not cars Article from: May 04, 2009 02:45pm POINT-to-point speed cameras will be introduced in NSW, but Roads Minister Michael Daley vows they'll only be used to target trucks and not cars. The cameras will be installed on 20 stretches of road, covering distances as short as two kilometres and as long as 80km. Mr Daley said heavy vehicles remained over-represented in fatal crashes with speed all too often the cause. Heavy vehicles made up about 2.6 per cent of all vehicles on the road, yet were involved in almost 20 per cent of road fatalities, he said. Mr Daley said a Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) survey of major freight routes in 2005 found 51 per cent of heavy vehicles exceeded the speed limit. Nearly seven per cent of those exceeded the limit by more than 15km/h, it found. "There's no place for cowboys on our roads, and this new technology will catch them out," Mr Daley said in a statement today. Point-to-point cameras calculate the time it takes a truck to drive between two points, thus determining if the vehicle was speeding over that stretch of road. Mr Daley insisted there was no plan to introduce the speed cameras to target cars in the future. "I have no plans to introduce it for anything other than heavy vehicles," he told radio. "Light vehicles are not under the same commercial imperatives that heavy vehicles are." Mr Daley dismissed suggestions the point-to-point system is a form of revenue raising, saying it will cost the government $5 million a year to run even after any revenue from fines. He said the system would require some changes to legislation, and it was hoped that all 20 sites would be operational within two years. An awareness campaign will be launched to inform truckies about the change. During an initial two-month period on each stretch of road covered by the cameras, drivers will get a warning letter instead of a fine. Locations of point to point cameras LOCATIONS and distances of new point-to-point cameras in NSW. The NSW Government states the new cameras targetting speeding trucks only will be placed on (road distance): Mount Ousley Road, Mount Ousley (6km) Great Western Hwy, Raglan - Meadow Flat (27km) Hume Hwy, Coolac - Gundagai (20km) Hume Hwy, Yass - Coolac (75km) Mid Western Hwy, Bathurst - Blayney (35km) Monaro Highway, Bredbo - Cooma (34km) New England Hwy, Muswellbrook - Aberdeen (11km) New England Hwy, Singleton - Muswellbrook (46km) Newell Hwy, Eumungerie - Gilgandra (27km) Newell Hwy, Peak Hill - Tomingley (17km) Pacific Hwy, Kew - Port Macquarie (21km) Pacific Hwy, Port Macquarie - Kempsey (40km) Pacific Hwy, Nabiac - Taree (24km) Pacific Hwy, Harwood - New Italy (35km) Federal Hwy, Hume Highway - Collector (20km) Pacific Hwy, Woodburn - Wardell (20km) Mitchell Hwy, Molong - Condumbul (28km) Golden Hwy, Sandy Hollow - Merriwa (34km) Gwydir Hwy, Glen Innes - Inverell (60km) Oxley Hwy, Gunnedah - Tamworth (60km) |

Serious question, why are trucks targeted so heavily on the road?
Do they all really speed that much? I drive a lot and rarely come across a truck in a hurry. |

It could be argued that heavy vehicles are over represented in fatal crashes due to the fact that they are "heavy vehicles" and most passenger cars involved in a collision with a heavy vehicle are going to come of seriously worse for wear due to the sheer mass of the heavy vehicle. Regardless of whether the truck is doing 100kph or 105kph. As far as I'm aware the safety cams operating in NSW aren't currently configured for speed detection and are for monitoring time spent driving, breaks etc.

This is the just the first step in introducing them for all vehicles I would say. The government needs money and this will surely be a perfect revenue raiser.

I regularly drive all of these roads and i can say that alot of truckies speed along them. Some absolutely crazy if you have ever driven up the Pacific Highway between Raymond Terrace and Kempsey at night. (140+kmh) Nabiac - Taree has more highway patrol cars then you can poke a stick at already lol. The one i will find most interesting is the Sandy Hollow - Merriwa area. Usually a place to open the legs up on the long trip and carry some speed. I think they will catch alot of people out.

Don't get too caught up on safety-cam. My team at work supports it and fixes it. I know how often it breaks and where...

Just spray paint the lenses of the cameras in clearcoat. That should do the trick.
If it wasn't just about revenue raising they would have just mandated that all trucks be speed limited to 110kph.

They already have a Speed Camera and a 'Noise' Camera on Mt Ousley targetting trucks specifically. So are they removing the speed camera? Or having a Point-too-point Camera and then a Normal speed camera?

And if you really want to get paranoid, SA has the Safe-T-Cam as well, linked with NSW RTA.
And it only takes a flick of a switch to get cars.

Trucks are supposedly speed limited, too 100kp/h but the limiters are tampered with, truck doesn't have one, or "it just broke officer"

It'd be interesting to see the ratio of km's/hours driving to fatalities for trucks vs normal road users.

I have driven semies for many years & find that the majority of truck drivers are sensible and drive to the prevailing conditions not like car drivers who jump in the car after work in the city and try to drive all night to go shooting in Bourke & end up DEAD. These cameras should be used for ALL motorists regardles.
