Default Mk 1 GT3000 Capri? I think.

Hi guys,
New to the forum and from cruising around in it this is a good site with plenty of good information. Well done.
I have come across what I think is a 1969 Mk 1 GT3000 Capri imported from England.
Story is it belongs to your classic older lady who has paid the rego on it for the last 5 years but has not been driven. She has owned it since the mid 80's when she had it rebuilt and sprayed black from bumper to bumper and debadged. I would describe its condition as "restorers dream".
It starts frist pop and sounds good with the dual exhaust but has a bit of a misfire under load and has a four speed manual. Black interior with centre consule, lots of switches, no rips in upholstery and a MPH speedo. Odo shows 75,000 miles. Carpet and dash are a bit scruffy.
Body has no dents and only one small spot of visible rust. There are several areas where rust has been cut out, apparently 5 or 6 years ago and these still look good and seem to be professional. The paint however is not good with crows feet and flaking in spots. No rust in boot or guards or under doors or floor.
It has a bolt on spoiler attached to the boot and a really big plastic air dam at the front. Not pretty pieces and i assume not original. Vents in body work behind the doors, extractors, so on and so forth.
She has asked me if i want to buy it as m always after another project and being the friend of a friend I dont want to rip her off. Any ideas what it would "roughly" be worth. To me it seems a good starting car as its mostly there and no rust so im seriously thinking of buying it. Are the mechanicals expensive to do up?
Any ideas on this would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Damo

Hi Damo, nice to see your thinking of getting into capris. As to this particular one if its a 69 model then it wont be a australian v6 as they only came out from 70 to 72. In fact i dont think the english v6 came out in 69 either (or maybe towards the end of 69.) If its a aussie 4 cyl. with v6 running gear this will affect the puchase value. If you care to put up the details from the build plate there are guys on here that can decipher it for you. There are some extremely nice v6 out there that started out as 4 cyl. so if you dont mind then it doesnt matter. Its value? Whatever you can haggle the owner down to. Or, depending on its condition and assuming it needs restoring, somewhere between 2 and 5 grand. (opinion only) Cheers,...ron.

Thanks for the reply Ron.
I have copied the engine and chassis number but is the build plate that alloy plate on the LHS inner guard? ( the one i didn't write down ). I'll see if i can get her to give it to me, although i dont think she knows how to open the bonnet with the clips on it.
The only reason i think its an english import is that she tells me thats what it is. From what i've read on Unquiecarsandparts there were English V6's in '69 so im hoping thats what it is. The rego papers state 1969 and 2994cc engine.
She's letting me have it for a bit to clean up and see if i can get it running right before I decide and then if I dont want it I will sell it for her. There's nothing quite like driving these old cars though with no power steering, very direct throttle response and lots of noise. One drive around the block and i'm feeling like a kid with a new/old toy.
Cheers, Damo.

The V6 was release in the Uk in late September/Oct 1969. All Uk import cars (as opposed to Aussie KDK (knock down kits) had a black vin plate on the inner guard, RHS from memory. The early UK GT V6's also had a matt black bonnets as option.

Prices of Capris are very difficult to judge as buyers have a different opinion on quality. Basically anything without major rust and a genuine V6 is worth anything between $5000-$17,000 but whether you'll find a buyer is another thing all together. If its a matching number, original colour car in very good condition, look for btwn $10-12,000. Anything less and you are giving it away as they are only going to get harder to come by as most people are now hanging on to them.
