Dead EL climate control display

1998 EL Fairmont.

Is there a common / easy fix when your climate control display gets very, very dim? Can barely see the numbers and only when it is very dark. All the buttons seem to be working OK.

I see them on Ebay for around $200 - fair price?

Or you could change the light globe in it ;)

just change the globe mate, might aswel put some blue LED's in there instead.

you didnt dim it by accident did you?
the dash light adjuster also dims the climate control display.

well, thats an assumption, does in my ED!

Can't be that simple can it? How do you get the climate control panel out of the dashboard to change the globe? Is it just backlit all the time?

No - I checked that. When we first got the car I could hardly see the instruments at night. Took a while to work out how the dash brightness adjuster worked (for an idjit like me anyway). Had to read the manual :-)

You need to take off the dash surround. Its not hard, theres three screws above the cluster, 2 above you knees, and a couple near the radio. You'll see how the climate module comes out after that.

The globe is always on and it dims when the headlights are on.

I'd gladly sell you mine for $200 on an exchange basis

It has a working globe.

I was lazy and got my fate to fix mine - in out in 20 minutes and thats with having a drink or two

So all it is when the display is totally blank but everything else is working ok is a blown globe? I didnt realise a LCD display would have a globe in it!

Yep thats right - just a globe. If the globe has blown you can still see whats on the LCD Screen its just very hard to see - look closely

Heheheh. LCD's don't illuminate themselves, they need some form of back-light so you can see the contrast between active and dormant segments. Old-school use a simple light bulb or LED, but these days they use fancy electro-luminecense panels behind the whole display for crystal clear clarity (no pun intended)
