You don't need a torque wrench to remove anything. If you're going by the book you need one to put it back on, but if you know what you're doing you don't.

i'm just interested in giving it a new coat of paint and would like to remove it and do a good job.

however i've been told that it has to be taken off and put back on with a torque wrench so that the head isnt damaged.

torque wrenches are only made for tightening bolts not undoing them. just use a spanned and be careful not to squash the new gasket to much when tightening it back up, they dont need to be super tight.

Mate, a torque wrench is for tightening(doing up),you do not need a torque wrench to UNdo(loosen)......

make sure when u put it bak on the gasket on the rocker cover doesnt come off or move when u put it on
this will result in an oil leak which i have at the moment

just number your leads 1-6 if you don't have the prestamped ones and don't overtighten it when you put it back on.. At worst it'll leak alittle if you under tighten the bolts/nuts or crack the rocker cover if you over tighten it, but either way you couldn't possibly damage the head itself

dont forget to fully clean it, else all those bits of burnt gasket on the head will cause oil leaks... use a razor and some 2000 wet and dry, bought the el up like it was chrome... no leaks so far!
