Don't know if it's possible, but they would've had the keys.
Stealing a car without keys, is only for the stupid crims, (losers on joyrides, drugged up idiots on a crime spree to get their next hit). The career/seasoned crims doing big jobs, & using high end performance & luxury cars, break into you home first, & steal the keys, then go steal the car. Doesn't have to be at the same time either, they'll come back to take the car hoping you haven't had the locks changed (which most people don't), that's assuming you've even noticed the keys missing. Stealing these types of cars this way, is more common than hits the news (unless they use it for something like this bank heist), especially in Sydney & Melbourne. You do hear about them often though. It doesn't say it in that story, but a guy working in an office down the street, after hearing about it came down to see if it was his Cayenne that was stolen last week, as far as I know it wasn't however. |

Seems they knew that a Lanos would not be quite up to the job.
I suppose my question could be put more generally. Is anything more than a basic alarm a waste of money? |

Interesting that they managed to circumvent many $$$ worth of security in a matter of seconds, I wonder if they knew the wall where the ATM is was where the tellers sat beforeh and?

As far as I'm aware with my limited knowledge on these systems, they're run off a proximity switch, where if the key is within a certain distance say 15m, you can use the buttons on the car to unlock the door and start it if it has keyless ignition
But once you get out of the range of the key it will shut down Hence why they say you can start and drive the car without getting the key out of your pocket It's going to create a whole world of dramas in a few years when these things start playing up I remember the lanos cars used to play up even from new with a similar setup

You gotta admit it was well planned and perfectly executed and they even managed to wreck one of the ugliest Porches ever made.
I wonder if their success has got them planning another one?

Seems a bit much to steal a Porsche just to do that, a dirty old landcruiser would have gone through both sides of the bank.

This is looked at wrong. The new thing to do is to break into a house, steal the keys & take the car. Car keys are usually pretty easy to find in a house.
Grab em, pinch the car. Easy as.

If you're that way inclined anything can be worked around... what else you got in the warehouse?
Locksmith anyone. e.g you need a spare and a minute in a car yard for a ba, given some brains things happen. These guys won't be far, cctv everywhere to start with, they're done they just don't know it yet.

My spare BMW key is hidden pretty damn well, it's a pain to get them out and only I know where they are. Secondary spare is located at a close friends house and I have the spare to his XA falcon (keeps us honest!). My regular use key is kept within a foot of me when sleeping and generally isn't easy to spot. So hopefully nothing happens to my car.

Maybe they knew the Porsche would have all the safety (airbags, etc.) to make sure they weren't knocked out after crashing into the building - can you imagine doing that in a Great Wall?
They would have either car jacked the Porsche, or stolen the keys. Good to see the WRX getting used as the getaway car - reminds me of the same craze in Sydney about a decade earlier! Now to wait for WRX insurance premiums to go through the roof again.... |
