One of the first things I noticed as a P plater in the mid 1980's , that went onto my mental list of "people to overtake & get in front of" was the really dangerous culprit mentioned in the first post.
"turning the head to talk to a passenger" Drivers who insisted on turning their heads to speak to the person riding shotgun or to someone seated in the rear of the car. Were REAL trouble , I learnt to spot them very quickly due to their inability to drive in a straight line for more than 50 meters. Other predictable habits of the "head turner" was the random use of the brake pedal to drop 20+ clicks off their speed without turning their head. You could also rely on a "head turner" to take his left or right hand off the steering wheel in order to point out whatever they were talking about to their passengers. The "head turner" is not to be confused with the now nearly extinct "I can't read a street directory drivers" who you really had to be careful around , due to their lack of indicator use & random stopping in the middle of the road Drivers with habits like this are the most dangerous to anyone who values their car because if you crash into their rear end _you_ are in the wrong & no amount of talk after the fact could get you out of being in the wrong.
