GET THE NEEDLE FIRST, BEFORE THE GAS.

I have had with and without the needle. Was miserable for 2 days without the needle, just spewing up everywhere. Worst sickness I have ever had. With the needle first I was starving and stopped in at Red Rooster on the way home. Felt fine.

geez, did the original poster asked for comfort or to have the crap scared out of him

they will give you whatever they think is necessary. talk to your doctor/specialist about your worries and they will make it easy for you
as a kid, i had the needle - nothing to worry about
as an adult i have had the gas 3 times - nothing to worry about either
i assume you have not had anaesthetic before, so are unsure if you will be sick. talk to the people who will be performing the operation if you have any problems. when i had an eye done at the age of 9, i did throw up, but in reality, i got over all straight away

with the technology and knowledge we have available today, your operation should go very, very smoothly. your doctors are the ones to talk to. others, while trying to help may just have the effect of making you feel worse

the main thing to remember, is you are having the operation to feel better - the quicker you have it, the quicker you will feel better . . . so as silly as this sounds, look forward to it. at the very least, don't think about the operation, think about after it when all is well

i will need full anestetic, ...... can anybody tell me how it feels to be put under anestetic, ive been told your whole arm goes cold & your vision goes blurry then youre out of it.... & you usually vomit when you wake up?
HellCat - I'm an old man. 11 out of my last twelve operations I have been awake for. The last one when I was out to it was the best. Like you I don't like blood, needles, knives or doctors. In the waiting area the Anesthetist will put a cannula in the back of your hand. This is how they administer the knock out drugs. If you can stand a pin pri*k then that is all you will feel for the entire time. If he does his job right you won't even realise it has been done.

Once in the operating room and on the operating table you can ask that they tell you nothing or to explain everything they are going to do. When it is time to go under they will ask you to count back from 10 to 1. I prefer counting forward from 1. Never been able to get past 3. Going under is no different to having a sleep, waking up and not remembering what you dreamt about.

Coming round in recovery I was speaking German. The only German i know is what I have learnt from Rammstein songs. (Gott weiss ich will kein Engel seine - God knows I don't want to be an Angel). As was said by someone previously it is a great legal high. I spent 24 hours in ICU and arrived singing Do ra mi from sound of music. First conscious patient they had had for a long time.

The times when I have felt anxious I just concentrate on slow deep breathing and this will slow your pulse and lower your blood pressure and most importantly relax you - cheers and take care

Thanks for the info guys, I've been late to reply to the topic as ive been avoiding it & also started stressing reading some replys.

im 24, i have been stiched up a few times/broken bones & have had a bad dislocation to the shoulder ( that requires surgery, but isnt what im going in for)
i remember all the times ive been injured from crashing bikes (alot very very bloody), plus when i was a kid i accedantally gashed my finger with a stanley knive...... i guess its just past stress trauma that has made me hate this sort of stuff.

the pain of a needle is nothing, its the thought of something going into me & the fact im gonna be cut open, i needed 4 people to hold me down for a blood test last year the throught that blood is being removed fom me I find repulsive.
I wish i could just shut my eyes/look away while i get needled but it isnt that easy.

the doctor gave me some valium to take a couple of days leading upto the op but I have also been told to take some a couple of hours before booking in.

i have asked to be gassed & then needled, but hopefully the valium will chill me out enough not to need gas before hand, i just dont want to startthrashing around fighting when theyre trying to needle me...... do you wake up with a needle in you? thatt will just send me wild.

i am looking forward to getting it over & done with though

For what it's worth, I've had 2 operations as an adult. One for tonsils and the other for wisdom teeth.

The wisdom teeth was a walk in the park, but my tonsilectomy was a little bit complicated. My blood pressure spiked during the operation and the bleeding was apparently hard to get under control. When I woke from the anaesthetic, honestly I felt pretty crap. But don't get me wrong, it wasn't unendurable agony and I didn't feel like I was dieing. They say adult tonsilectomy's are very painful, and it certainly wasn't a walk in the park, but the thing that caused me the most grief was the nurses doing hourly observations thoughout the night in hospital because they would turn the fluros on and I couldn't get any sleep.

So from a guy who has a had mildly traumatic surgery... you'll be OK :-)

You'll have to ask your doctor, but you will probably wake up with the drip needle in your hand. If this is going to make you spin out, you need to have another chat with your doc.

guys, im ALIVE!

i turned up to the hopsital & i had my valium before i left, this may make me sound like a wimp but i burst into tears the second i walked into the hospital, they gave me tablets to calm me/send me to sleep... didnt work

i was sobbing for the 2 hours waiting to go in, turned out the anesitist & surgeon shop at the bikeshop i work at so i had abit of a chat before they took me into theater,

they were rolling me in & i covered my eyes & was begging to leave, they put the nitrous on me & told me to breath, I was breathing too hard & they told me to slow down because was jamming the hose or something.... they said i will feel like im floating in a bit... the gass kicked I just started absolutely laughing my head off & saw him puting the needle in my hand, I started feeling really strange & euphoric while laughing, I heard them say something like ' yep hes out' I just had enough in me to say 'AHHH ha YOU ALMOST HAD ME!' (while pointing &laughing)

next thing i know I instantly sat up & asked (did it not work?), they said its all done now lay back down!... my throat hurt afterward for abit because the had a pipe in me.

the whole lead up was the most terrifiying experience but getting put under was an amazing/strange experience..... i cannot believe that a surgery can fell like its over in a split second.

i was in recovery with a drip in me for over an hour & it didnt phase me.. musta been drugs because I FUGGEN hate drips.

Thanks for all the advice you guys gave me, i appreciate it

Well done. You'd rather not have to have surgery but when it has to be done it has to be done. I have been 'repaired' twice. Neither time was fun or comfortable but watching nurses (females one anyway) certainly was a nice distraction. Also being a shared room with someone else can be a bonus if their cool.

For my knee reco the guys in opposite bed had the same op except his knee was twice as bad as mine and was never going to be 100% again...I stopped feeling sorry for myself after that. He was cool though and we compared notes and nurse ratings till the Mrs arrived!

I am going into hospital in a few weeks to have my nose rebored and honed to clear a blockage. I am not looking forward to the op but I am looking forward to the results. PS my sister has a complete phobia about hospitals which can be traced to a childhood injury.

Have you hada bad experience to make you feel like this?

Had my wisdom teeth out friday just gone. Somewhat relaxing i thought. The cannula in hand in just like someone pinching you hand, got that in
Was talking to the anesthetist about how i hate euro cars on roadside(i work for RACQ roadside) and he tells me he has a BMW and loves it both laughed about that, wheeled into theater looked around at table full of pliers, scaples and ****. woke up just over hr later feeling like i had blinked. 10-15 mins after waking i was alert ready to go.

I've been under 3 times- only remember one though! First was when I was a baby, second was for wisdom teeth at 14. I was terrified, and they offered me the gas to put me under 1st before putting the needle in, but told me that was really unpleasant, hence picking the needle. I actually remember going under really well, my mum was there and I kept inking "hang on, shouldn't I be asleep by now??"

Second time was for my jaw surgery (about 8 hours under, so lots of prep). They gave me Valium on the day when I got there, then a needle for sedation. From that point on I remember telling he nurse I wasn't a fan of Stoner (don't remember why!!!) and then nothing. Don't want to know what I said/did after that!!!!

After I tend to be really groggy, but not nauseous. Only been like this when I had oxycodone- that was HORRIBLE , hallucinations, vomiting, pain, fever, all with a broken upper and lower jaw, and hip just having had a graft taken from it. Not a fun night that one!!!

Things have improved a great deal the last decade , it doesn't hurt and with the drugs you forget it pretty much all, light injection which is just a tiny ping and your drowsy , mask over and you wake up , tea and sandwhich in 30 minutes , dead easy so relax
