Hotdog - ever use one?

For those in my age group, X generation and older, there used to be a bit of a craze in SA to replace a normal muffler in the 70's with a HOTDOG. this was a straight through muffler, round shaped, like a sausage, which may have been also painted red from memory. (hense the hot Dog tag).

the rice burners today use MILO cans, and we may frown upon them, but our generation also had a similar fad, but wasnt visable like the Milo cans of today.

useless trivia i know, but i couldnt help myself.

Yeah, remember them well. Also air shocks to lift up the back of the car.

Our generation had just as many fads.

I remember when i was in primary school (i am 30 now) my uncle had an V8 XC ute with hot dog mufflers, complete with hot wire 14 inch wheels, jacked up rear etc etc (hey it was the 80s!)

He used to pick me up from school and all my mates said 'wow it sounds tough, it must have hot dogs?!'

You can still get hot dogs (or hot dog shaped resonators.)

Had a hotdog on my EF instead of a standard rear muffler.

I assumed they are just a small version of a straight through muffler. Ends up a bit louder due to the size restricting the amount of fibreglass.

cs123, my brother had air shocks on his charger and my other brother had them on his XB sedan.

Yes AFAIK.

You can still easily get hotdogs. I bought 2 brand new 2.5" hotdogs when I built my side pipes 2 weeks ago. Basically straight through pipes with little bumps to catch exhaust like any car just a whole lot louder. I'm pretty sure they are illegal these days due to sound and pollution stuff but I may be wrong.

Yep had the hot dogs and air shocks, in fact there's a set of Gabriel High Jack air adjustable shocks still in my XA Coupe, not for long tho....

My current system has a hotdog, probably most nice barky V8 systems do, perhaps without their owners realising.

another trick i heard,mates dad did after the 2nd world war,was copper exhaust systems on flat head v8s
i had hot dog muffler on my old mk2 cortina,had to put another muffler on ,was way to loud going to work at midnite

it maybe a cat converter mate, they are also small but filled with honeycomb which block and make ur car a slug

My AU's Lukey mufflers packed it in and were replaced by two 12" hotdogs, the exhaust guy thought the sound would almost be the same. errrrrr wrong.
it was like twice as loud, and lost that bassy note, sounded pretty horn at 5000+ rpm was very drony at 1500-3000rpm.
and they were pretty straight through

Replaced them with 2 14" Lukey ultra flow, and it sound great, and lost the flat spot in higher RPM.

ive got a hotdog on the rear section of my exhaust. sounds good. but i want a little extra volume so im gonan replace it with straight pipe. my gf's old car had a cannon so im immune to drone lol

My BA has pacemakers, a redback 2 1/2in cat and exhaust and just the pipe at the back.

I tried it with front and rear redback exhausts, then a front exhaust and rear hotdog then the way it is now.

Its loud but sounds ************** awesome under load and shifting down.

I owned a 74 corrolla in the mid 90's with only a hotdog. My 76 vw golf was running only a hotdog until i removerd it and installed a GSXR1100 muffler. And last but by no means least, My AU turbo ex cab runs a 3" pipe no muffs or cat (LPG only) with only a resonator in the rear. The 70's and 80's are still alive............

nearly everytime i got an exhaust done i used a hotdog. such a nicer sound

my last car, a vn v8, had a 2.5" pipe from extractors back with a single hot dog on the rear.

having just that on the back gave it a really beefy deep tone.

Had a couple of hot doggies on my 308 HZ. If you look close the little dimple things designed to catch the exhaust only work one way, turn them around and it's a hell of a lot more fun.

I used to work at Ayers Rock and the boys said they could hear me leave work a few KM and a few sand dunes away.
