How do you become a train driver??

Well as the title suggest, im thinking of becoming a train driver, but i have no idea where to get started. i've heard that the training is about 9 months and thats about all i know. ive also tried looking on the adelaide metro web site for a careers page but there doesn't seem to be one.

can anyone point me in the right direction????

I heard on the radio the other day that they are looking for 50 traineed drivers in WA and cannot get any, maybe worth investigating.

my dad was a train driver many moons ago.... for QR

i know he started as a kicker and worked his way up from driver to train controller and then to writing training documents to train the train controllers and has now left after 25years and owns his own train controlling training company(called operational learning solutions)... which has been VERY successful and is now doing training for botswana, india and hopefully soon in malaysia

so its definitly something with lots of room to grow.

he does a bit of everything actaully

safety procedures
training assesments
and delivers training also

it grew so much that he now has an office right on Queen St Mall Brisbane and a few staff..a mate who worked with him and ME

doing all the office stuff
GREAT view....i know where i will be for river fire ;)

firstly you need a train with some tracks. next you must start engines, select forward gear, release the brakes, hang on.

no, i dont want to become a blonde train driver lmao

i want a job that sounds better than the one that i have, and since i didnt finish yr 12, that kinda narrows down my selection

get any sort of job with the rail co. porter, yardman, cleaner, in my experience up here in central qld if you are a qr employee its near guaranteed youll get a job as a driver when its internally advertised.
ive even been told just because im a contractor to the railway ill find it easier.

Move to WA ( Pilbara region ) and track down an apprenticeship as an engineer ( or whatever the proper name for a train driver is) and start off on 70k a year. Person known to me up here just started one with a contractor to the mining sector and is loving it.

Let me update this for you.

firstly you need a train with some tracks. ( Straight tracks. Because you are in Adelaide, anything over 30deg. and the probability of the tracks buckling is high!)

next you must start engines ( Correct, but in Adelaide the diesel engines are running, but what for if the train is going nowhere?)

select forward gear, ( In Adelaide, only if the track ahead has not buckled, in particular Adelaide - Noarlunga line!)

release the brakes ( If you do get a job, here in Adelaide you must make sure there is not a train or two on your line that have broken down ahead of you, then release brakes, dont forget forward gear!)

hang on ( yes, just like all the passengers in Adelaide have to do due to over-crowding of people utilizing the public transport system.)

Maybe a freight train driver may be less stressful....

I'm a freight driver in NSW. I started (commercially) about 4 years ago as a trainee driver and got put through as a driver last year. I started cleaning steam engines with a heritage operator and got to know a few people in the industry and got a job through them. More importantly I got an idea of what the job is realy like. I don't know what the training (pun not realy intended) is like for suburban passenger work, but there is no quick way to learn how to handle any train. The shifts can be a killer, at least on freight, as they start at all times of the night and day.

The pay is quite good.
