There is no speedo cable in these they are electronic
Remove it - toss it out and get another one with similar KMS on it and swap it over

I thought it was just a little plastic gear somewhere inside the dash or somewhere which breaks and it stops the odometer from working?

IS it electronic or not? If Not then they have a little gear that can slide along the axle and not contact the other drive gear then just slide so they mesh together that is what stopped mine

pretty sure they are electronic (xe are) and have little plastic cogs in the speedo that turns the odometer, these loose a couple of teeth as they get old and fragile. VDO can fix and recalibrate them, about $100 i think. Another 2nd hand one may have the same problem. Its a problem with both ford and holden of the era.

g`day trev

i had the same problem with my XF UTE and it was a small plastic cog in the back of the speedo.

i called a guy i knew on the sunshine coast that specialised in instrument repairs and he replaced the gear . cost me about $80 about 4 and a half years ago. he said it was a very common problem and he kept the parts in stock. maybe you can get the part from ford and fit it yourself ? i would have had a go but was too busy with work at the time and i had the ute on the market so needed it fixed asap.

Go with rob351's option... they are electronic, it is just a plastic cog, E series do it too.

The fault is that common it comes factory std.

like others have said its jsut a pastic cog, they are made deliberatly weak so that if u try and modify them they break, but over time they get soft and brittle.

NEVER in a ford press the clear/reset trip metre while moving, this is what does it mostly.

mate if u join up www.xfalcon.com the xd-xe-xf specialists there are guys there who have made and do sell these replacement gears made from metal for about 30 bucks, the cheapest fix u will find i gaurantee. i think also if u surf eaby serch for cruising central or cruizen or something, he sells them he is also a member of xfalcon

I bought a whole new cluster off ebay, same problem so bought another one and it was fine, two clusters was still cheaper than having it fixed (about 60 inc post).
