Sorry to hear of your loss Dan.
Good to see a guy not afraid to talk openly about these things and encouraging other guys to have themselves checked. It's a shame that sometimes guys (and girls) can let things go for too long and suddenly it is too late.
Cancer is a part of everyday life and everyone knows or is related to someone who has survived or died from this disease.
Cancer can get you at any age .... don't let your youth be your excuse for not having a regular check up (ESPECIALLY if there is a history in your family).

Sorry to hear about your dad mate. I remember hearing that something like 7/10 men in Australia over 70 actually have prostate cancer. Not sure if that is exactly correct but it is an alarmingly high statistic. Also, 7-8 men die of prostate cancer every single day. http://www.prostate.org.au/ has plenty of info regarding treatment, how to go about getting checked etc.

My father was diagnosed with Protate cancer about 4 years ago. He also had an enlarged prostate. After a sucessful (and painfull)operation to "grind" the prostate back down to normal size, he undertook a course of hormone injections and several other medications.
As this treatment continued his PSA count dropped to a negligable level.
However in the last 6 months it has elevated again, to above the level it was when he was initially diagnosed.
He now has a "infusion" of drugs every 2 months or so (he says hes too old for chemo), and he says he has never felt better.

He was 82 on 22/12/2006, so hes not doing too bad.

The doctor sticks his finger up your quoit. The prostate is between the ureathra (sp?) and the bowel. Its about the size of a walnut, and thats what he feels for, any enlargement.

Are they generally all the same size? How does he know what size it should be?

I think they record the size of it when you first get checked, and then later on in life compare the size it is at that point to what it was at your first check. A guy at work who was right behind Movember said there is also apparently a new form of blood test which can be used as opposed to the less than pleasant method described above, but it's nowhere near as reliable.

what, his fingers or your bum? j/k.

they know what to look for. the exam can also be done by an endoscopy procedure, which basically means instead of a finger, they knock you out and use a camera instead.

I am sorry for your loss DanB, as I lost my dad also this year.

Anyhow, my view on it is :-

Better 1 finger than a whole hand (joking).

I also heard having a regular "tug" is a method to keep Prostrate cancer at bay ( medical advice), not to sure about that, but not a bad preventative (Serious)

Im sorry for your loss and may your dad rest in peace in heaven.
My dad also had prostate cancer it was initialy diagnosed as prostate B then after 12 months he had prostate cancer. It was very painful for dad as mum would ring me 3 am to come over coz my dad has been in the loo for over 2 hours moaning and crying coz he couldnt urinate. As i started to assist him in recovery and so on i was looking into it.On janauary 5 this year 2006 i was sitting with dad on his rear patio and having a coffe and smoke when he suddenly dropped and had a stroke and was basically in a vegetive state by the time ambulance had arrived as well as 5 repetitve heart attacks that night and he passed on following morning.I forgot all about prostate cancer so yes thanks for reminding me.But yes do a checkup guys especially if a family member has had it or passed from it as it can be hereditory. And try your best to stop smoking as it is cancers best friend.Looks like im off to the GP in 2007.
Not keen on losing the virginity on the rear? lol

I've had the finger treatment (my GP's gay so he doesn't mind doing it) and an endoscopy. I can't emphasize how important it is to have these procedures done.
Prostrate cancer is one of men's biggest killers.

A guy at my wife's work was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer this year. I believe that he is on the mend and has beaten it.
I lost my father last year to Liver Cancer. It's not a very pleasant thing to watch one of your loved ones die from cancer.
I also participated in Movember this year for the first time. Us guys from work (about 13 of us) raised over $4500 towards Men's Health Issues. Please encourage people around you to support worthy causes like Movember and the Biggest Morning Tea, which raise much needed funds towards research on not only cancer, but other life threatening ailments.

IN A WORD NO!!!!!......trust me I know.

You can be 35 or 85 you only know by getting the finger treatment and a psa test..if the psa comes back positive..i.e. above a level for your age then you are sent off for further checks and tests.

These involve an ultra sound..yes its put up your rectum it also involves a biopsy yes its put up your rectum and samples are taken and tested.

If you are positive for prostate cancer..depending upon what stage it is at and if it has escaped and is now either eating your soft tissue or your bones depends on the treatment you given.

Some are lucky and can have the prostate removed(if it has'nt spread) however this also poses problems of incontinence both renal and rectal because of nerve damage.(although they're making advances to prevent this).

You can also be put on medication to slow down the rate of spread..this includes pills such as Androcur and Cosudex and a 3 monthly hormone implant ..Zoladex.

Another drug is Flutimide but this has side effects for one in twenty which basically means you crap yourself in your sleep being the worst.

The main aim of all treatment is to lower your testosterone level with female hormones which in self has side effects you become more feminine lack of hair growth,b...tch tits etc.

There is also for some a radiation treatment known as brachytherapy which involves implanting radioactive isotopes into the prostate..for those who have gone past most steps towards the end there is heavy chemotherapy.

There is a lot more to my basic explanation here..trust me I KNOW.

The urologist I saw for an unrelated condition a couple of years ago is apparently one of the pioneers or something regarding this type of treatment over at Greenslopes Hospital (PA?). I think his name was Dr Glenn Wood. Nice bloke.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, Dan.

My family has a history of bowel cancer, i had my 1st colonoscopy and gastroscopy about 5 weeks ago on advice from our family GP.

They say if there is a history of it, you should have it done when you get to 35yo.

I was scared about getting it done, but i can tell anyone that should have it done, dont worry about a thing, you are put under a sedation and dont know anything about it until you wake up.

The worse part of it was drinking the stuff they give you to flush you out, and not being able to eat for 36 hours.

Letting a gay man stick his finger up your rear can't be a good thing IMO Pedro! LOL!

Having said that, I guess it's 100 times better letting a gay doctor check your prostate than dying from something not diagnosed.

In all honesty, I'm 36 and haven't had such a check. Perhaps it's time. My preference would be for a female doctor though! LOL!

Further to my last post there is also the side effect of impotence..this is more to do with the pills than ops but ops can have same effect ..depends on surgeon.

I look at it this way' tis better to be alive and walk hand in hand for many years than not have treatment and only have months'

IMO do it sooner rather than later the age factor is shifting to a younger diagnosis.

A very close friend of mine was diagnosed when he was 51 he was told your too young to have this you should be at least late 60's early 70's.

Seems he had it for some years before diagnosis due to spread..it is a slow cancer in most cases.

I had mine checked earlier this year (female doctor..yay) as my brother has a condition that made it prudent to get checked. All clear here and I can say that the knowledge of being all clear far outways any misgivings about getting checked in the first place.
If thats the worst I have to go through to be around to see my kids grow up I'll be very thankful.
