Today I bought some new parts for a computer upgrade. The motherboard has SATA. On the board theres 1 IDE channel. Without trying to sound too much like a ********, does that mean I need SATA drives and my old ATA drives won't work?

You should be able to use the 1 IDE channel which allows for two ATA devices (disk, dvd burner, etc). SATA is available if you want to use a SATA interfaced disk. With this set up you will be limited to 2 ATA devices.

Just be sure you set one device (usually hard drive) to master and the other (usually CD) to slave. Theres jumpers on the back where the cable plugs in, and should be a diagram on the top label.
You will want to invest in a SATA hard drive eventually. They read/write MUCH faster than regular IDE drives do.

"So for now, i can get away with DVD drive and 1 hard drive on the same channel"
It's not a 'real good idea' (being polite) to share HDD channels around, even with other peripherals within the PC. Otherwise, a HDD sharing with a DVD for instance, will clog the channel and slow down the sys' when using the DVD at the same time. Kind of defeats the purpose of the upgrade, doesn't it ... |

I'm now running both hard drives on 1 channel. I have my network up and running so I'm going to install my dvd drive and dvd burner into my other machine and install across the network. My plan is to buy a sata drive and use my existing ide 160 gb as a back up. Going to get one of those hard disk cases which plugs into your pc via USB. I can use it to back up my system. Another question i have an its for anyone with an ASUS board. This is the board I have. P5GD1 Pro. Found my fan is running at low speeds. I'm trying to increase the speed, but can't find an option that allows me to do this. I am using probe which tells me cpu temp and fan speeds, but doesn't give me an option to increase it. i have a feeling that the standard fans issued with the cpu's can't have the fan speed changed manually. I think I will invest in an after market cooler. |
