There are reports that roofs are now starting to come off buildings.

Here is a site for the satellite image that the news reports are using:

The wave reports result from automatic updates to the website by the measuring devices from what I could tell. The devices are putting up readings of 18m, and there was a need to clarify they were wrong.

Much like some reports there are cracks in the walls of Tinaroo (sp?) Dam, also false. Bloody twitter.

Good luck, and hang on tight.

Using my iPhone to type this havnt had power since 5. The force of this thing is unbelievable. I don't know how my windows havnt popped out but they shaking and somehow water is coming straight through. Looking outside (in apartment up castle hill in Townsville) I can see trees everywhere and a few roofs missing. Part of this roof is flapping around but sOmehow holding on. I still can't believe the power of this thing and I'm not even in the middle of it. We are meant to be at work at 12 in the morning to help start relief, I don't like my chances of getting there. Stay safe guys and all the best while this ***** of a thing blows over

Just spoke to the old man in Airlie Beach (1am Thursday 3rd Jan), typically chilled about the whole thing, sounds pretty windy from what I could tell over the phone (he says it's calm) says it's too far away to cause him too much trouble (but trees have already fallen in the driveway).... He reckons it's nothing too exciting there, get's windy, and then calm, starts howling, settles down, this will probably go on for a few hours during which at some stage he'll probably go to sleep. Sounded more concerned about how we were fairing with the Vic floods down this way haha.... Anyway, will call him tomorrow to assess the damage

The eye is nowhere near Airlie Beach, he's just saying that it's not too bad. They'll get wind alright, just nowhere near the conditions further north.

No, it's crossing the coast near Tully now. Check out the Cairns radar - http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR192.loop.shtml

Likewise... We're about 20mins north of the Cairns CBD and survived relatively unscathed. Just some damage to vegetation.

Not much wind now, but the rain is bucketing down.

good preparation and a good result , as been said buildings up north are built for the conditions these days .

just the trees and flying objects would be your biggest fear .tully seems to have been hardest hit by the looks . hey dave how is the wind at home there , we put everything away so will be fine but was a little worried about all the stupid gum trees around our street . wind and rain in rocky still lol but i finally got my power on ..

Seems like the damage wasn't as bad as the hype lead to believe.

Good to see no death or major injuries reported. ....YET

Seems as though the preparation and building regulations since Larry struck have made sure things can be returned to relative normality.

I heard 3 new births last night were made. 2 in Innisfail and 1 in Cairns. Thats good news.

looks like tully was worst hit. the more major centres north and south seemed to come out ok structurally. apparently a lot of minor communities that are barely on a map have been decimated too.

hope all are ok. still no reports of injury or death so fingers crossed.

i had to shake my head at one bit of news. a reporter was telling the story of 'adam' who decided to stay put in his caravan and ride it out. showed footage of his vr commodore outside with a tree smashed across the boot. car is uninsured, as was the caravan! 'adam' didn't seem very bright to me.

Yep, there is always one and if he had of been injured he would have been screaming blue murder as he would have to wait for it to be safe enough for emergency crews to get to him, if they even knew he was still there. He shouldn't have been on the media as next time other whack jobs will think about doing the same.

Thank goodness it looks like no one had been injured or worse. Let's all hope and pray that Queensland don't have to endure any more events.

Yeah it is strange the things people do but remember this, have you ever been in a situation like this? All of his stuff if uninsured id say preservation of his items became a priority to him, so he stayed to do what he could to protect everything he owns. Im damn sure i wouldnt have wanted to be in his position or anyone that was affected by this disaster making the decision to go or ride it out. Alot of people did ride it out and survived, as to this point it wasnt detrimentle to anyone (hopefully that continues). The human sprit is a bloody strong thing.

Also hats of to Anna Bligh through everything our state has been faced with this 1st month on the year, she has been a shining light.

Nope, just the same Baby 3 times....

Hope all are safe and damage easily repairable.

The wave measurements work on an accelerometer..so measure how far up & down the buoy travels. From what I understand, waves were breaking over the buoy near Townsville - so it was bouncing up & down rather than travelling 'with' the wave.
Glad as my Sister has house in Townsville, and is/was one of many at risk of being flooded. Sister OK - well out of harms way, but yet to find out on House.

Yep i did see that, but remember these people were elderly. So yes they should have heeded warnings given, they didnt and im sure they werent the only ones that soon discovered that it was far too late. They ended up being safe though.
Townsville is expieriancing some tidal surge now.
