i work in the travel industry and we have always been using text lingo so i have no problem with it, the problem is people who are not use to seeing words shortened or abbreviated that dont like it and people who dont want "change" im sorry but in this day and age you have to adapt to change

When I was between 15-17 we raced billy carts down our steep hills and even had walkie talkies when we were racing. :yeees:

But the Text / SMS rubbish should be banned on the forum.

What happened to proper language?

I work in the legal industry and we have never used abbreviations derived out of laziness and cost cutting and if I did, I would be sacked.

Not all change is good, and this is one example. Communication is always most effective when it is clearly expressed and accurate, within reason.

Dont confuse "change" in society with increasing laziness in society as a result of technology...

Im all for technoogy making life easier and giving us quicker and easier ways of doing things, but not if it comes at a cost of our intelligence.

Working for a statuatory authority, acronyms become a second nature... but abbreviations are definately a no-no in any legal instruments i prepare, memos/reports that i write.

But that's a professional piece of work usually drafted for a delegate of the treasurer etc. I dont see the big fuss about the professionalism of someone's posts on a forum. If you get what a member is saying (or trying to say) then surely the structure of their message is irrelevant? Seems to be more of an annoyance to some people than a genuine problem. I dont care for flightless birds but i never give the penguins a hard time

Do you include lack of spelling and punctuation in your definition of abbreviation?

I dont care if you work in the travel industry, sms typing sucks and it is as simple as that. And the army, navy and air force use a very different kind of abbreviation. They dont use sms style typing such as ppl for people, plz for please, wid for with or there for their (is that an abbreviation or a spelling error or something else???)... at least not in a professional sense.

I can live with my 12 year old daughter making some spelling errors, typos and even using some sms speak. But if she repeatedly replaced their with there or the other way around (which is basic grammar), I would be horrified. That's not laziness as the word is the same length... so what is it then?

No one is perfect and I dont think anyone on the forums expects perfection, or a complete lack of sms typing but when it becomes difficult to read (not yours Miss XR6), it is just pointless and it breeds an attitude of laziness which extends beyond efficiency into really atrocious spelling... which is my point.

I topped the class for English in highschool yet I have no problem with the net talk.

What I don't understand is why people get so uptight about it.
Is it becuase you can't understand it? if not, then there should be no reason why you can't abbreviate.

for example:
people = ppl = easy to understand and much quicker to type
y = why = also easy and fast to type.

its a little easier on the fingers to abbreviate sometimes. I fail to see why some people make an issue about it. Sure there are some who over-use abbreviations to a point where yes, the post IS unreadable. But that just comes down to that person often using MISPELLED abbreviations and so forth, or perhaps just an idiot?

anyway my point is, flame where nessessary, but this shouldn't be an issue. I like to abbreviate, but I don't on this forum becuase I hate online flaming.

I don't have too much of a problem with the SMS style abbreviation, unless they have done it so much that you can't understand what it is that they are trying to say. Spelling and grammar (or lack thereof) is what really gets up my nose.

I blame OBE i.e Outcome Based Education. I hate to break it to new graduates, but the people who will ultimately employ you take a dim view of " english ebonics "

Not that we don't understand it just we have higher standards than others. I used a link from here the other day to a forum that allows swearing and txt spelling and it was a disgrace. My other pet hate is the misuse of the word to and too. Too many people want to use the word to instead of too too often. I definately think we need a spell check.

I like it as much as I like people calling their cars their "rides" and their mates "dude". It's bad enough that Little Johnny is trying to make us become the 51st state of the Seppoland without all the other Americanisms getting into our language.

You are right, unfortunately its evolution of language which I would'nt mind so much if it was an all Australian evolution.

I'm with Miss_XR6 on her point of view. People from different industries, upbringings and such will communicate in different ways, such is evolution and social development. Using your career-path as a swinging bat to show your method of communication is superior is the finest example of a ****ing contest if I ever saw one.

I work in IT *gasp* and nearly all documentation is abbreviated unless the method of communication (i.e legal binding document) requires proper spelling and grammar. What is shocking is the ones who are naught-often willing to slightly change their perception of right and wrong in order to accomodate new-blood and fresh mentality to a growing customer base such as these forums.

For example, if i wanna type like this bcoz i think it is easier to type and comm my idea then y not do it? I am sure if you could not understand what someone was trying to say, and you asked nicely for them to translate from sms-spk to Politically Correct Grammar they would do so

That being said, god damn Miss_XR6, PUNCTUATION! Stop, breathe!

Take a little bit of pride in what you do, people. It's really not that difficult.

This comes from a 20 year old, male, furniture removalist who left school at the end of year 11. Sorry to disappoint those who generalise by age or certain areas of employment, but if there's a rule I can break, I'll break it.

Those who think the youth of today, or those in a 'lesser profession', are those responsible for this onslaught of idiocy (not saying that's exactly what all this spelling/grammar/txt talk is, but it seems to be how most who don't take part in it do see it), think again.

Those who do use an SMS style approach to everything (I've even seen letters written by hand that have used this) more often than not appear unintelligent in their posts. The same goes for over-the-top spelling and grammatical errors. The odd one here and there isn't an issue and barely even gets a look in, but when 80-90% of every word typed by a user comes out incorrectly spelt, it begins to promote an image of a braindead forum member.

Above all else, I'll end this post the same way I started it.

Take a little bit of pride in what you do. If you know how to spell a word, spell it.

EDIT: By the way, I've downed near on half a slab of Bundy Rum stubbies today and believe I've spelt near to all words in this post quite well. Just to prove a few of those who look down on the 'younger generation' wrong. It's not a 'group' thing, it's just the way certain individuals are.
